India's Clean Energy Targets Way Ahead of Others: UN Official
-
NEW DELHI: India can lead the world in the area of sustainable energy from renewable sources, as its clean energy target is way ahead of the UN global goal, senior official of the United Nations said today.
"We believe that India can lead the world. Your (India's) targets here and some of the progress you are making here is way ahead of UN global targets. But of course, there is a lot more work to do," United Nations Under Secretary General and CEO for 'SE4ALL' initiative, Kandeh K Yumkella, said.
He was speaking with reporters after a round-table discussion on sustainable energy with Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi.
India targets 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, which includes 100 GW of solar, 60 GW of wind power, 10 GW of biomass-fired power and 5 GW of small hydro power.
Mr Yumkella, who is also special representative of the UN Secretary General, said, "We used India over the past decade as a laboratory to bring convergence between energy access and climate change recognising still 2.7 billion people around the world rely on charcoal, cow dung and firewood to meet their primary energy needs."
"This, we believe, is unfair and inequitable giving that technologies are known."
The UN's 'SEE4ALL or Sustainable Energy for All' envisages making sustainable energy a reality for all by 2030.
Commenting on the ties with UN on clean energy, Mr Goyal said, "I think this partnership of UN with India will certainly lead India to become world leader in the sphere of clean and affordable energy for all."
"UN's initiative SE4ALL aims that by 2030, entire world and every citizen of the world should have affordable energy access. All countries in the world should feel energy secure (by 2030) while at the same time ensuring that our consciousness to cleaner energy to climate change is also taken care of," the minister said.

Woman Held for Trying to Smuggle Out Rs. 22 Crore Ephedrine
-
KOCHI: A South African woman has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle out 14 kg of white powder-- suspected to be Ephedrine-- worth Rs. 22 crore at the international airport at Nedumbassery in Kochi.
Customs Commissioner K N Raghavan said officers of Air Intelligence Unit intercepted Dorcas Dolly at the departure wing of the airport last evening on suspicion that she had contraband drugs/psychotropic substances, conducted a detailed examination of her baggage and detected the drugs.
"The search resulted in the recovery and seizure of approximately 14 kg of Ephedrine cleverly concealed in ladies vanity bags found in her two checked-in baggage," he said.
The woman, a native of South Africa, was attempting to depart to Malawi via Doha by a Jet Airways Flight.
The seized Ephedrine, a controlled substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 is valued at about Rs. 22 crore in the international market, Mr Raghavan said.
Customs officials said further investigation is in progress to find out whether she was part of a racket involved in smuggling drugs out of the country.
In a report filed before the Kerala High Court in March this year, the state government had said that the global drug mafia was making Kochi, the bustling business centre of the state, a hub for their activities.

In Big Leap, Scientists Test India's Most Powerful Cryogenic Engine
-
NEW DELHI: Mastering a complex technology once denied to India, the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO crossed an important milestone today when it successfully tested the country's latest and most powerful cryogenic engine for 800 seconds.
The cryogenic engine will power ISRO's next generation monster rocket, the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III, capable of carrying the 8 ton class of satellites to space.
Today's full duration test gives ISRO the confidence to start planning for the first full flight of GSLV Mk III slated for 2016.
Under pressure from America, India was denied this cryogenic engine technology and it has taken Indian scientists 20 years to master the technology, which uses liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as fuel.
Last year on December 18, 2014, India had successfully flight-tested a mock-up of GSLV Mk III without the cryogenic engine.
ISRO already uses a smaller version of the cryogenic engine on its GSLV MK II rockets. The smaller engine was first tested successfully on January 5, 2014, but is not as powerful as the cryogenic engine tested today.
When the country does finally fulfil the long cherished dream of launching Indian astronauts from Indian soil using Indian rockets, the GSLV is expected to be rocket that will be used.
Scientists at ISRO say they will take seven years from the time that they get a go-ahead from the government, to make that possible.

MP Tiruchi Siva Calls for End to Stigma on Transgenders
-
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Batting for equal rights to the transgenders, Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva, who introduced the private memer's bill in support of the community, today said the centuries old stigma attached with them must stop now.
"Transgenders must be provided constitutional rights like all other citizens and time has come to stop centuries of oppression and stigma faced by gender minorities," said Mr Siva during a programme in Thiruvanthapuram today.
Over 200 transgenders participated at the third Transgender Habba - a 'Big Push for Transgender Welfare initiatives in Kerala' - organised by Sangama Pehchan project that reaches out to over 27,000 gender minorities in Kerala.
Mr Siva, who had last year introduced the private member's 'Rights of Transgender Persons Bill, 2014' in Parliament, urged everyone to support the Bill.
"Many members of parliament have expressed solidarity and I am expecting more support to the Bill. The historic law will be passed in support of transgender very soon," a press release quoting him said.
The Rajya Sabha has already passed the bill. Rajesh Umadevi, Director, Sangama, an NGO working for the human rights of sexual minorities since 1999, said the organisation is involved in national advocacy for the last one month to promote passage of the Transgender Bill in the winter session (of Parliament) "to stop the centuries of injustices, discrimination and persecution faced by gender minorities of LGBTQI in India."
CPI(M) politburo member and former state minister M A Baby said transgenders deserve equal rights like any other citizen. "I support the bill and we should make sure it is not diluted," he said.
Sangama's programme manager Shiji Alfred said that under the Pehchan Project they are reaching out with HIV services to 90,000 community members in Karnataka and Kerala since 2010.

Boat Capsizes in Ganga, Villagers Save 12 From Drowning
-
PATNA: A sand-laden boat capsized in the Ganga in Patna district today with villagers saving all 12 on board from drowning.
Danapur Sub-divisional Officer Arvind Kumar Verma said the incident happened near Bramhachari Tola under Maner police station in the district.
The engine-fitted boat was going from Maner to Pahleja Ghat in Sonepur in Saran district across the river when the accident took place.
"The water level is high in the Ganga due to the rainy season. It seems the boat loaded with sand lost its balance due to waves and sank. Villagers living along the banks rescued all the 12 persons who had fallen into the swirling waters," Mr Verma said.
The SDO said all the saved persons are natives of Saran district and were going on the boat to their villages.
The district administration is now trying to take out the boat which is still under water. Investigations are being conducted whether the mishap occurred due to overloading of sand.
