'Nothing wrong' in Mulayam scolding IPS officer: UP CM Akhilesh Yadav
  • LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday saw "nothing wrong" in his father and Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav "scolding" a senior IPS officer in the state.

"When Mulayam Singh Yadav can scold the chief minister, there is nothing wrong in his scolding an official," Akhilesh said to pointed questions by newspersons in Farrukhabad.

Meanwhile, Governor Ram Naik refused to comment on the controversy, terming it is a political issue.

"I will not comment on it...it is a political issue," he said, adding, "Whatever has to be done, will be done."

The SP chief is in the eye of a storm after he allegedly threatened with serious consequences IG-rank IPS officer Amithabh Thakur asking him to mend his ways.

The audio content purported to be the voice of Mulayam went viral on electronic media after the IPS officer released it along with the text of the alleged conversation.

Senior UP minister Ahmed Hasan, himself a retired IPS officer, trashed Thakur's claims as "irresponsible and childish" and demanded stern action against him.

"Such a behaviour amounts to absolute indiscipline...stern action should be taken against him as it can leave a wrong impact on the police force," Hasan said, adding that no government should ignore this kind of behaviour of its senior officer.

Meanwhile, another senior UP minister Azam Khan demanded that the charges of rape levelled on Thakur should be probed thoroughly. "He has committed an immoral act and should not be spared," Khan said in Jhansi.

He was commenting on the FIR registered against Thakur at Gomti Nagar police station here alleging that he had committed rape. The FIR was lodged hours after he gave complaint against Mulayam for allegedly threatening him.

Pakistan high commission invites Kashmiri separatists for Eid
  • Pakistan high commission invites Kashmiri separatists for Eid
NEW DELHI: The Pakistan high commission in India has invited Hurriyat leaders and other separatists from Kashmir to its Eid Milan party to be held on July 21s.

"There is nothing unusual about our invite to Hurriyat leaders," Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit told IANS.

He said Pakistan will continue to extend its support to the people of Kashmir.

"Pakistan will continue extending its moral, political and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir in their legitimate struggle for self-determination as provided for in the United Nations Charter and universal declaration of human rights," Basit said.

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, however, said the decision whether to attend the party or not, is yet to be made by the party.

"We are yet to make a decision of attending the party. Since we are under detention, we have not decided anything yet," Hurriyat spokesperson Ayaz Akbar said over the phone from Srinagar.

Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front leader Mohammad Yasin Malik and Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said they had not received the invite for the Eid Milan and would only take a decision after receiving it.

Leaders of Hurriyat Conference were also invited by the high commission earlier for the Iftar party, which was cancelled later because of the heatwave in Karachi that caused several hundred deaths in Pakistan.

Despite the opposition to the "involvement of a third party" in resolving the Kashmir issue by the Narendra Modi-led NDA government, talks were held between the Hurriyat leaders and other separatists from Kashmir with Abdul Basit. They were invited to the Pakistan high commission on Pakistan's National Day in March.

Vijay Mallya suffers legal setback in F1 car ad case
  • MUMBAI: The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by Vijay Mallya to overturn charges against him for allegedly violating foreign exchange rulesadding to the legal challenges facing one of the country's most prominent businessmen.

The country's enforcement directorate, responsible for fighting financial crime, has alleged Mallya entered into an unauthorized agreement in 1995 to advertise the Kingfisher beer brand name on racing cars during Formula One championships between 1996 and 1998.

Mallya is chairman of United Breweries which makes Kingfisher beer and is now around 40 percent owned by Dutch brewer Heineken. The directorate has said he did the advertising deal without seeking permission from the central bank.

Such clearance would have been needed because the agreement involved money going out of the country.

Lawyers for Mallya, who is also facing pressure from lenders to repay dues linked to his grounded carrier Kingfisher Airlines , had told the court that the non-compliance was not deliberate or wilful, according to the court documents.

The country's top court on Monday rejected the appeal in the long-running case and could now force him to face the enforcement directorate charges. A spokesman for Mallya declined to comment on the court judgment.

Mallya remains involved in Formula One as a co-owner of the Force India team.

Mallya's business empire previously included India's largest spirits company United Spirits Ltd, but he sold most of his shares in the company and gave management control to Britain's Diageo Plc in 2012.

In April, the board of United Spirits begun a procedure to remove Mallya as the company's chairman due to alleged financial irregularities. Mallya has denied the allegations and has refused to resign.

GMR in race for 5 airports in Philippines worth USD 2.4-bn
  • GMR
HYDERABAD: GMR-Megawide is in race to acquire operations of five airports worth USD 2.4 billion in Philippines under PPP model.

As many as six companies, including GMR-Megawide, have evinced interest in the airport projects, according to a statement issued by the Philippines government.

GMR-Megawide currently runs Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in that country.

"These PPP projects involve development, operations and maintenance of the five regional airports," the statement said.

The private partner would provide necessary improvements to the airport to enhance passenger safety, security and access.

Besides, it would have to bring in efficiency in passenger and cargo movement, operations as well as actively market the airports in order to develop direct international passenger traffic.

The other prospective bidders who bid for the five airport projects are Metro-Pacific-JG Summit Consortium, Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Miguel Corp, Philippine Skylanders Inc and Union Equities.

These airports involve an estimated total cost of Php 108.19 billion (USD 2.40 billion), the statement said.

The five regional airports in Philippines currently being offered under PPP mode are Bacolod-Silay, Iloilo (Bundle 1), Davao, Laguindingan, and New Bohol (Panglao) (Bundle 2), the statement added.

MCIA was the first airport in Philippines to be privatised under the administration's ambitious PPP programme aimed at modernising key infrastructure assets.

In the international competitive bidding process, GMR-Megawide Consortium had emerged as the highest bidder after offering a bid premium of 14.4 billion Philippine Pesos (approximately USD 305 million) for the airport.

The formal award of the project in April, 2014 was followed by a six-month transition period to complete project formalities leading to the transfer of operations to GMR-Megawide on November 1.

  • NEW DELHI: India's consumer price inflation edged up to 5.40 per cent in June, government data showed on Monday.

Market cheers Greece deal, sensex surges 300 points
  • MUMBAI: Indian market gave the Greece deal a big thumbs-up with the benchmark BSE sensex rising 300 points for the second day to 27,961.19 — its biggest single-day gain in three weeks — driven by across-the-board buying activity and tracking upbeat global stocks.

"An easing of crude prices provided the additional strength to the Indian market which was initiated by global rally led by Greece bailout. The new Greece bailout deal will provide an immediate relief to global risk," Vinod Nair, head fundamental research, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services.

Besides, a higher closing at other Asian markets and a better opening in European markets, which jumped up to 3 per cent, had a positive impact, brokers said.

The 30-share index opened higher and quickly regained the crucial 28,000-mark in afternoon trade to hit the day's high of 28,005.17.

But profit-booking at improved levels dragged it down below the 28,000-mark, which settled at 27,961.19, a rally of 299.79 points, or 1.08 per cent, its biggest single-session gain since June 22 when it had rallied 414.04 points.

Intra-day, the gauge had scaled the 28,000-level for the first time since July 8.

Similarly, the 50-share Nifty recaptured the 8,400-level to hit a high of 8,471.65, before settling higher by 99.10 points, or 1.19 per cent, at 8,459.65.

Asian stocks ended higher after eurozone leaders reached an agreement over a third bailout for Greece. Key benchmark indices in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea ended up by 0.96 per cent to 1.57 per cent.

China shares were trading higher as Beijing's efforts to reverse a stock selloff appear to be holding up in mainland China, the Shanghai Composite rose by 2.39 per cent and Hong Kong index rose by 1.30 per cent.

Sumit Nagal wins Wimbledon boys' doubles title
  • LONDON: Youngster Sumit Nagal entered the history books as only sixth Indian to win a Grand Slam junior title after winning the boys doubles trophy at the Wimbledon championships with partner Nam Hoang Ly, here on Sunday.

17-year-old Nagal and his eighth seed Vietnamese partner overcame the fourth seeds Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan 7-6(4), 6-4 in the title clash that lasted 63 minutes.

Yuki Bhambri was the last Indian to taste success at the top level in junior tennis when he won the Australian Open boys singles title in 2009.

Ramanathan Krishnan (Wimbledon, 1954), Ramesh Krishnan (French Open and Wimbledon, 1979) and Leander Paes (Wimbledon 1990, U.S. Open 1991) are the other junior Grand Slam singles champions from India.

Sania Mirza had won the Wimbledon girls doubles title in 2003 with Russian partner Alisa Kleybanova.

There was little to separate the two pairs as the winners won 65 points, only three more than their rivals.

Nagal and his partner broke their opponents in the 10th game of the second set and that proved decisive in the outcome of the match.
