Rahul Gandhi attacks Modi, asks 'Why is PM backing Shivraj Chouhan?'
  • NEW DELHI: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday unleashed yet another offensive against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of shielding BJP chief ministers Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Chouhan.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivrah Singh Chouhan is facing opposition heat over Vyapam scam while Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje is in the midst of a row over her support to former IPL chief Lalit Modi.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of All India Mahila Congress, Rahul Gandhi reminded PM Modi of his poll pledge ''na khaoonga, na khane doonga (will not indulge in corruption and will not to let anyone indulge in corruption.'

"Why is PM Modi backing leaders in Rajasthan, in Madhya Pradesh?" Rahul said, taking a dig at PM Modi.

"Why is PM allowing corruption in Rajasthan, in Madhya Pradesh; when is he bringing back Lalit Modi?" the Congress vice-president asked.

China says its stand on Lakhvi based on 'facts, spirit of objectiveness'
  • China says its stand on Lakhvi based on 'facts, spirit of objectiveness'BEIJING: Virtually defending its move to block India's demand in UN to take action against Pakistan for the release of Mumbai attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, China on Thursday said its stand was based on "facts" and in the spirit of "objectiveness and fairness".

"As a permanent member of the UN security council China always deals with the 1267 committee matters based on facts and in the spirit of objectiveness and fairness," foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters here.

She was responding to a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking up the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting at the Russian city Ufa on the sidelines of the BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summits on Wednesday.

Terming Modi-Xi talks as "constructive and inclusive", she said China has maintained good communication with India and other parties on the Lakhvi issue.

About India's concerns over terrorism, she said, "I can tell you that both India and China are victims of terrorism. China opposes all forms of terrorism and supports the UN playing the leading role in coordinating international cooperation on anti-terrorism. China has actively taken part in global cooperation."

At a meeting of the UN sanctions committee last month, India had sought action against Pakistan for release of LeT commander Lakhvi in the 26/11 trial in violation of a UN resolution but the Chinese representatives blocked the move on grounds that New Delhi did not provide sufficient information.

Today's replies by Hua were little more elaborate than the Chinese foreign ministry's earlier replies on the issue.

On July 2, answering questions on the technical hold put by China on the Lakhvi issue in UN, deputy director general of the Asian Affairs Department of Chinese foreign ministry Huang Xilian said the issue should be discussed in the India-China joint mechanism on terrorism between the two countries.

"We have mechanism of counter-terrorism consultation between the two ministries" in which it can be discussed, he had said.

However, in his briefing after Modi-Xi talks last night, foreign secretary S Jaishankar said, "the MEA can discuss with the embassy (Chinese). There are a range of mechanisms."

The Prime Minister while conveying his concerns to Xi told him how the people of India viewed the Chinese action, he said.

China also had put a technical hold earlier on India's demand for UN security council to take action against Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin and LeT leader Hafeez Sayed citing rules the UNSC resolution 1267.

In a letter to the current chair of the UN sanctions committee Jim McLay, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Asoke Mukherjee had said Lakhvi's release by a Pakistani court was in violation of the 1267 UN resolution dealing with designated entities and individuals.

Unilateral sanctions hurting global economy: PM Modi
  • Unilateral sanctions hurting global economy: PM ModiUFA (RUSSIA): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that "unilateral sanctions" are hurting the global economy, in a veiled attack on the West which has imposed sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

He pitched for stronger and deeper cooperation among the member countries of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) at a time when the global economy is "not strong" and crisis is being witnessed even in prominent developed nations like Europe.

"Unilateral sanctions are hurting the global economy. So it is very essential that BRICS economies deepen their cooperation. BRICS should also work with other developed regions," he said while addressing the BRICS Business Council meeting here, soon after the start of the BRICS Summit.

He did not elaborate but his comments were seen as a veiled attack on the US and other countries of the West which have imposed sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

The West imposed sanctions on Moscow after Crimea joined Russia in March 2014. The standoff between them have been escalated because of Russia's role in the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin as also Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and South African President Jacob Zuma were present when Modi spoke.

"The global economy currently is not strong. Even prominent developed economies like Europe are in crisis.

Financial markets are unstable," the Prime Minister noted as he advocated the need for tapping the "unique" strengths that each member country of the BRICS and developing linkages.

Modi pointed out that BRICS countries together form 44 per cent of the world population, contributing 40 per cent to the global GDP and 18 per cent to the world trade.

"There are several similarities and resources among the BRICS countries like agriculture, manufacturing, technology, services, human resources, sustainable development," he said, adding the economic cooperation among them would be a "driving force" for development.

India is capable of defending itself: Manohar Parrikar
  • LUCKNOW: A day ahead of a meeting of Prime minister Narendra Modi with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa, Russia, Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said that India is "capable of defending itself".

Parrikar's statement assumes significance, as few days back the Pakistani defence minister Khawaja Asif had told a news channel that if needed, Pakistan can use the nuclear weapons for its 'survival'.

"I am the defence minister of India. I know my job very well. And, let me tell you that India is capable of defending itself," Manohar Parrikar said, while sounding a caution to the neighbouring country.

On Monday (July 6), the Pakistani defence minister had told a news channel, "We should pray that such an option never arises, but if we need to use them (nuclear weapons) for our survival, we will."

Parrikar refused comment on China's support to Pakistan in the United Nations over Lakhvi's release.

"The issue pertains to the foreign ministry," he said.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Chinese President XI Jinping that Beijing's support to Pakistan in United Nations over Lakhvi's release was unacceptable, while raising India's concerns.

Replying to a question on likelihood of India repeating a Myanmar-like operation along the Pakistan border to flush out militants, Parrikar said, "The question is based on certain assumptions."

However, in a lighter vein, Parrikar, said, "Secretive/covert actions of the government are not meant to be revealed." He further added that as compared to the previous regime, there has been a drop in the number of ceasefire violations.

India, US join hands to close in on tax evaders
  • India-US
NEW DELHI: India and the United States signed a tax information sharing agreement on Thursday, under a new US law meant to combat offshore tax dodging by Americans as well as by Indians stashing funds abroad.

The agreement aims to close a window for US citizens to avoid tax through financial products like equities, bank accounts and insurance.

In return, New Delhi expects to garner Washington's support to bring back illicit funds stashed by Indians in foreign tax havens and boost revenues by getting information about Indians working in the United States.

The agreement "would enhance tax transparency and eventually bring in higher equity into the direct tax regime which are necessary for a healthy economy," India's revenue secretary Shaktikanta Das said at the signing in New Delhi.

Following his election promise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has enacted a 'black money' law that foresees tough penalties and a jail term for tax evaders who fail to declare their overseas incomes.

Washington has signed pacts covering more than 80 tax jurisdictions to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, or FATCA, requiring financial institutions to share information about Americans' accounts worth more than $50,000.

Last year, Modi joined leaders from the Group of 20 countries in Australia in an agreement for countries to automatically exchange tax information on a reciprocal basis by the end of 2018.

Under the pact, banks, mutual funds, insurance, pension and stock-broking firms will report their American client details to the tax department for sharing with the United States, said an Indian finance ministry official.

After #FATCA indian govt can ask for informationa about those Indian who r making investment in US insurance, pension or broking co.

The Rio 2016 Olympic torch
  • Rio Olympic torch
    Movement, innovation and Brazilian flavour
    • These are the three qualities that form the essence of the Rio 2016 Olympic torch, which was unveiled on Friday (3 July) morning in Brasília.
    • Its design aims to reflect the meeting of the Olympic flame with the human warmth of the Brazilian people, the hosts of the first Olympic Games in South America.
    • The torch’s texture has triangles running the length of its body, alluding to the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, and the floating effect of its different segments refers to the efforts of the athletes.
    • One of its main innovations is the movement of these segments, which open up and expand vertically when the Olympic flame is passed from one torchbearer to another. This is known as “the kiss of the torches”.
    • “The design of the Rio 2016 torch was inspired by the Olympic Spirit, our country’s nature, and the harmonious diversity and energy of our people,” said Beth Lula, Rio 2016’s brand director.
    • Over the next two months, Rio 2016 and the torch relay partners – Coca-Cola, Nissan and Bradesco – will announce public campaigns to select the torchbearers.
