Twist and chant: World gears up for PM Modi's Yoga Day
  • NEW DELHI: The heart of India's national capital will transform into a sea of colourful mats on Sunday as thousands perform the camel, cobra and other postures for the first International Yoga Day championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shortly after dawn on a New Delhi boulevard, some 35,000 bureaucrats, students, soldiers and others are to take part in the 35-minute mass outdoor yoga session, hopeful of qualifying for the Guinness Book of Records.

Yoga enthusiasts in other countries are also expected to stretch and bend for Sunday's celebration of the ancient Indian practice , including in Britain where mats will be rolled out along the banks of the River Thames.

PM Modi, a vegetarian who practices the craft daily, has made Yoga Day a key initiative of his government since he took office 13 months ago.

"Yoga has the power to bring the entire humankind together!" Modi tweeted last year after pitching the idea during his speech to the UN General Assembly.

Preparations in India have been gathering pace since the UN agreed to the day, with schools, military barracks and even jails encouraged to participate in their own sessions on Sunday.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and others have been roped in for promotion, and Modi's many potbellied officials ordered to classes to practice "wind-releasing" and other postures.

Posters and other advertisements have also been published throughout the country encouraging residents to descend on their local park for "yoga for harmony and peace".

Modi calls yoga "the anchor of my life", helping him work long hours on little sleep.

But the premier will make only a speech on Sunday and not take to the mat himself at the mass session along Rajpath boulevard.

Starting at 7:00am, instructors will teach the session, to be beamed on giant screens along the historic avenue.

Modi wants to reclaim yoga as an historical part of Indian culture which has been lost to the West because of its enormous popularity.

Modi has set up a ministry dedicated to promoting yoga, Ayurveda and other traditional Indian treatments. And he has started free yoga classes for his government's three million bureaucrats and their families.

"Yoga is the soft power of India and through that soft power the whole world can be one global village... (and) violence can be removed with this kind of peace," foreign minister Sushma Swaraj has told reporters.

Swaraj will be at the UN's headquarters in New York for the day's launch when scores are expected to strike a pose in Times Square.

But the preparations have sparked criticism, mostly from religious minorities who accuse Modi's government of pushing a pro-Hindu agenda in officially secular India.

Some Muslim groups complained last week that chanting the sacred Hindu sound of "Om" during yoga as well as certain poses, such as "surya namaskar" or sun salutation, have clear Hindu overtones and were against Islam.

"While doing yoga, one needs to do surya namaskar, which means you pray to the sun. The government needs to understand Muslims cannot pray to anybody except Allah," Asaduddin Owaisi, a Muslim lawmaker, said.

However, the government has said that participation was optional and that the day was focused on improving health.

Scholars believe yoga dates back 5,000 years, based on archaeological evidence and references to yogic teachings in the ancient Hindu scriptures of the Vedas.

Experts like Ishwar Basavaraddi, head of the Delhi-based Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, described it as India's "best cultural export" that transcends religion and soothes hectic lifestyles.

"The foundation of yoga is science and philosophy, not any religion," Basavaraddi said, defining it as "holistic exercise through energy and mind management".

Yoga novice Halil Ahmed, a paramilitary soldier in Delhi who has been taking part in government-sponsored classes, agreed.

"Yoga brings peace to the body and mind," Ahmed told AFP after a recent session spent chanting "Om".

Rahul Gandhi speaks to UP boys who cracked IIT; help pours in
  • Rahul Gandhi speaks to UP boys who cracked IIT; help pours inLUCKNOW: Help is pouring in for the Pratapgarh brothers - Raju, 18, and Brijesh, 19 - who cleared the IIT Advanced examinations earlier this week.

Dharamraj, father of Raju and Brijesh, is a daily wage-earner and desperately needs Rs 1 lakh to pay for his sons' admission fees.

On Saturday morning, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi spoke to the brothers Raju and Brijesh over phone from New Delhi, congratulating the duo for their performance, and also extending Congress' support for their admission.

Speaking to TOI, Brijesh said, "Rahulji spoke to both of us and congratulated us for our achievement."

Soon after, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari and his MLA daughter Aradhana Mishra announced they will give up salaries of one month, amounting to Rs 1 lakh, towards the payment of admission fee for Brijesh and Raju, whose father Dharmraj is a daily wage earner in their home constituency.

The sanitation giant Sulabh International has also said that it is ready to bear the cost of education of the two students.

Stand-up comedian Papa CJ has offered monetary help to the duo for their admission to IIT.

No relief for Asaram Bapu, court rejects bail plea again
  • No relief for Asaram Bapu, court rejects bail plea againJODHPUR: Self-styled 'godman' Asaram Bapu, who is in jail since September 2013 for allegedly raping a minor, was on Saturday denied bail by a court here, the sixth time his plea for relief has been turned down.

Additional district and sessions Judge Manoj Kumar Vyas rejected the bail application of 73-year-old Asaram, stating that an accused in a crime of such nature does not deserve bail

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had on Friday argued on Asaram's behalf. He had contended that the entire case had been fabricated and Asaram deserved to be released on bail. The court had reserved its order for Saturday.

Opposing the bail plea, prosecution counsel PC Solanki had said that the court must look into the circumstances of the alleged crime, including the age of the victim, before coming to a decision.

Asaram is lodged in a jail here following his arrest in September 2013 for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl in one of his ashrams.

Three big changes that will give boost to India’s nuclear programme
  • Three big changes that will give boost to India’s nuclear programme
NEW DELHI: India's nuclear programme is set to get a huge boost thanks to three big changes. First, Japan has asked India for a dedicated nuclear reactor site, signaling that not only is it willing to shed all inhibitions of doing nuclear commerce with India but is also keen to be counted with the US, France and Russia as a power building nuclear parks here.

Second, India is giving big contracts for six reactors each to US blue-chip companies GE and Westinghouse. This is a big shift from India's long-standing policy of signing deals for two reactors at one go. The six-reactor deal with the two American companies will mean cheaper pricing for India.

Third, a critical component of the nuclear industry, the insurance structure, will be activated next month when Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) buys a nuclear insurance policy at Rs 100-crore premium from a consortium that includes General Insurance Corporation (GIC) and a group called Nuclear Risk Insurers from Britain.

The Japanese willingness to set up a nuclear park in India is a major foreign policy advance. This is because Japan is the only country that has faced a nuclear attack and is still willing to invest in India, which despite the Indo-US nuclear deal is still a nuclear weapon state outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Meetings are slotted over the next few months to close Indo-Japan nuclear negotiations.

Tokyo's decision shows an even wider global acceptance of India's nuclear programme. Plus, Japan's government-driven investment plans have typically suited India most. Critical infrastructure projects, the Metro for example, took off on the back of the Japanese government's financial commitment. Capital-intensive nuclear programmes will benefit from Japanese involvement.

The 6-reactor-each order for Westinghouse and GE, which got finalised following US President Barack Obama's visit earlier this year, will lower costs, and costs have always been an issue while negotiating nuclear commercial deals with the US. The sites for these reactors are in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

One reason why high per unit cost of power have typically been cited by US companies were the provisions of the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CNLD) that asked for what many stakeholders thought were very high order of compensation.

An insurance pool was a critical part of the liability setup, and GIC plus the British group's Rs 1,500-crore insurance pool will cover India's civil nuclear programme, with NPCIL buying the insurance next month. According to the CNLD Act, this sum would be made available as compensation right away after any nuclear disaster or accident that impacts areas 10 km beyond the site. Payment will not depend on fixing responsibility and will be quick.

Since the CNLD Act made suppliers - say, GE or Westinghouse - liable for a nuclear accident, as opposed to global norm of holding the operator, in India's case NPCIL, responsible, nuclear liability rules became anti-investment. This issue was resolved through an insurance pool that covers risks for suppliers.

The resolution happened after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came back from the US late last year and instructed officials that the issue must be solved without changing the law and without putting a big financial burden on the government.

Lalitgate: AAP protests outside Sushma Swaraj's residence
  • Lalitgate: AAP protests outside Sushma Swaraj's residenceNEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party's youth wing on Saturday protested outside external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj's residence in Delhi over the Lalit Modi controversy.

Protesting AAP workers demanded resignation of the external affairs minister.

"This episode of Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje has completely exposed the true face of BJP," AAP leader Ashutosh said.

The protestors were seen shouting slogans denouncing the BJP and the external affairs minister over the ongoing Lalit Modi row.

They were also carrying posters and banners that demanded Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje's resignation.

Meanwhile, Sushma Swaraj is leaving for New York on Saturday to lead the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations at the UN on June 21.

In a sign that she continues to enjoy the confidence of PM Narendra Modi, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj will represent India next week in Nepal at a global donors' conference aimed at raising funds for the earthquake-hit country.

Fall of catwomen: Women enrolment dips in IIM-A
  • Fall of catwomen: Women enrolment dips in IIM-AAHMEDABAD: Amid all the hype about diversity in classrooms, the country's premier B-School, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) still has a student ratio heavily skewed in favour of engineers and male students.

Of the 400-odd students admitted to IIM-A in the 2015-17 batch, women make up only 14% — the lowest in the last three years despite concerted efforts by the institute to better the ratio on the campus.

In 2014-15, IIM-A introduced changes in its recruitment and admission process to ensure people from varied fields, as well as more girls, studied there. As a result, 28% of the admission offers for 2014-16 batch went to girls last year. In 2013-15, 22% of the admission offers went to women.

Prof Tathagata Bandyopadhyay, chairperson of admissions at IIM-A, said, "Variation in percentage of female students depends on several factors including the gender ratio at the time of applications. Applying the same selection criteria on the past data, we observe that year to year it could vary between 6-8% due to change in applicants' cohort, contents of the exam, etc. Having said that, we are re-examining our eligibility and evaluation criteria to explore how to maintain the quality of students, while encouraging gender diversity."

FOREIGN FACTOR: Starting this year, IIM-A has reserved 10% seats for foreign students, for which it received applications from six students and gave admission to two students. The institute, which had reserved a quota for transgender students, did not see a single application under the category.

ABLE MANAGERS: Fifteen students have been given admission under the differently-abled category. IIM-A usually gets a high number of disabled students and set up Equal Opportunity Office in 2001 to ensure that all students have equal access to resources.

ENGINEERS RULE: Students from engineering background dominate the batch at IIM-A this year with 91% admissions, which is more or less similar to the last few years

BJP backs Raje too, stormy Parliament session ahead
  • NEW DELHI: BJP on Friday set the stage for a stormy monsoon session of Parliament when it dismissed the demand for the resignation of Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje over Lalit Modi's claim that she had backed him in an immigration case on the condition that her help would be kept a secret from Indian authorities.

Disregarding Congress's stand that it would disrupt Parliament if PM Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership did not axe foreign minister Sushma Swaraj and Raje over 'Modigate', BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi dismissed the possibility of Raje quitting as "imaginary".

"There is no technical and legal base so that you can say there is any point of impropriety," the spokesperson declared, seeking to quell the buzz that BJP could be tempted to replace the Rajasthan CM in order to buy peace with the opposition. This came on a day when speculation about Raje's fate mounted after she skipped a scheduled visit to Anandpur Sahib in Punjab.

Trivedi's unambiguous statement put an end to the silence BJP has exercised on the matter and could lead to confrontation with Congress, jeopardizing the prospects of passage of key legislations like the land bill and GST.

Congress responded to BJP's solidarity with Swaraj and Raje by reiterating that it would not let Parliament function during the monsoon session if the foreign minister and the Rajasthan CM were not removed.

BJP sources said the party had not option but to keep quiet until they had ascertained facts from the Rajasthan CM. Sources said in her conversations with party chief Amit Shah and others, Raje denied making the declaration Lalit Modi had claimed she made to support him in an immigration case.

While Lalit Modi has claimed that he has a copy of Raje's signed statement which was submitted in a UK court to back the former IPL boss's immigration application, sources close to the Rajasthan CM expressed fear that "forged documents" might be floated to discredit her.

BJP also defended Raje's son, Lok Sabha MP Dushyant Singh, over the charge that he was helped financially by Lalit Modi. "It is not a new issue and facts have been mentioned in Dushyant Singh's income tax returns as well his affidavit before the Lok Sabha polls," Trivedi said.

BJP had already turned down the demand for Swaraj's dismissal for using her role as foreign minister to help Lalit Modi secure a travel document from the UK when the former cricket czar was wanted by Indian law for foreign exchange violations.

Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh said the BJP government was caught in a trap of its own making and the only way it could save itself and the monsoon session was by getting the resignations of Swaraj and Raje. "This is no longer a question of impropriety. This is now an issue of a deep nexus between a proclaimed offender against whom the ED has cases pending and the PM, the external affairs minister, the Rajasthan CM and the BJP president," Ramesh said.

"There is an unholy nexus between Chhota Modi (Lalit Modi) and Bada Modi (the PM). The third protagonist in this nexus is Gautam Adani... when Modi became Gujarat Cricket Association president, he was part of it," Ramesh added.

BJP, however, mocked the allegations against Raje and Swaraj as "laughable". "We have already made it clear that there is no corruption. There is no technical or legal definition of corruption or misappropriation is not evident. Opposition is using these issues to make a mountain out of a molehill for their own political gains on feeble grounds," he said.

The tough stance indicated that BJP is confident of riding out any trouble in Parliament with the help of regional players like Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress who don't seem to share Congress's aggression on the issue. SP has actually supported the foreign minister.

Russian engineer implants travel card chip into his hand to speed up commute
  • We can all appreciate how important those extra minutes in bed in the morning are, but one man is so committed to speeding up his commute that he has inserted his travel card under his skin.

Russian engineer Vlad Zaitsev has implanted NFC chips from both his travel card and his office swipe card into his hand.

To extract the chips, Zaitsev dissolved the cards in acetone. He then covered the resulting metal pieces into silicon, making it safe to insert the technology into the side of his hand.

A gory video of the procedure shows the silicon disk being placed into a deep opening in his hand, as well as his large scar when he is sewn back up.

Zaitsev now hopes to inject a chip from a credit card into his other hand, according to a Madrobots.Ru YouTube video.

"It is the perfect solution to not have to worry about losing an expensive season ticket, although I admit it's not going to be everybody's cup of tea," he said according to the Metro.

Although less drastic, travellers on the London's transport network have also found inventive ways to use their Oyster Card chips.

By snapping open their cards to retrieve the tiny piece of technology, Londoners have been known to attach chips to everything from key rings to wands.
