Sushma Swaraj's reply to Twitter insinuation: My daughter is a barrister, Oxford graduate
  • Sushma Swaraj's reply to Twitter insinuation: My daughter is a barrister, Oxford graduateNEW DELHI: External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday reacted angrily to a tweet suggesting she took favours to get her daughter a seat in a medical college through the northeast quota.

"My daughter is a barrister and Oxford graduate. What you say is absolutely false," she replied to the tweet.

The twitter handle 'Soch @pakoed' had insinuated that "Sushma is no stranger to taking and giving favours! Her daughter studied through NorthEast quota in medical college."

Twitterati immediately reacted, wondering at Sushma's impulsive response to a stray tweet. The handle @pakoed was deleted, though its tweet was retweeted by others.

Sushma's twitter supporters urged her not to be hassled by a "dog that barks" and keep up her good work.

Sushma's daughter Bansuri is a lawyer, who is reported to have appeared in passport cancellation matters relating to former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi before the court.

The Congress has pointed this out in its accusations against the minister, citing "conflict of interest".

The senior minister is facing flak for having helped Lalit Modi procure documents to travel to Portugal in 2014. Lalit Modi, who is wanted by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged financial impropriety in the money-spinning IPL, stays in London.

Her husband Swaraj Kaushal was governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993 and is an expert on the northeast.

Mumbai hit badly as autorickshaws go on strike
  • Mumbai hit badly as autorickshaws go on strikeMUMBAI: Autorickshaws in most parts of the city went off the roads on Wednesday causing inconvenience to the office-goers, school and college students and scores of senior citizens.

The Mumbai Autorickshawmen's Union is observing a one-day token strike in protest not just in Mumbai, but in the neighbouring Thane and Navi Mumbai as well. Union leader Shashank Rao said he will take a delegation to state transport minister Diwakar Raote in the afternoon to submit his memorandum of demands. This includes the demand for a ban on aggregator cab services like Ola and Uber within Mumbai and that the Hakim committee fare hike formula be continued.

This is the second time in two days that Mumbai commuters have been hit after Tuesday's strike by a section of taxi-drivers union led by Nitesh Rane.

Wednesday's strike saw many people either walking down to the nearest railway stations, awaiting the overcrowded BEST or ST buses, using private vehicles or two-wheelers.

Braving rains in many parts, passengers at the airport here as well as at the rail terminals in various places in the city had a harrowing time.

The strike, in which Shiv Sena and the taxi-men's unions are not taking part, led to a spurt in demand for various private and radio taxi services. Ironically, one of demands of the autorickshaw drivers is the a ban on these radio taxis.

Two coaches of Bangalore-Chennai Mail derail
  • CHENNAI: Two coaches of Bangalore-Chennai Mail (Train No. 12658) derailed near Basin Bridge railway station here on Wednesday morning. Passengers were not injured in the accident.

A first AC coach and a second AC coach derailed at 4.35am after the train crossed the Basin Bridge station, said Chennai divisional railway manager Anupam Sharma.

"The third and fourth coaches from the rear got derailed. Railway officials reached the spot and started restoration work immediately," he said.

Passengers of the two derailed coaches and other two coaches behind them were moved to other coaches of the train. The affected coaches were detached and the rest of the train reached Central railway station with passengers at 5.30am.

Workers and technical staff re-railed the two coaches, which jumped the track, by 7am. It took some time to tow away the coaches because the shunting engine could not be attached to the rear of the coaches because they were standing on a track crossing.

Workers fastened steel chain to the engine and the stranded coaches to pull them away.

The accident affected train services. Departures from Central station were restored at 7am. Arriving trains were detained at different stations and were brought in after 7.30am. Suburban trains were also delayed.

Musaffarpur-Yeshwantpur Express from Central was one the first trains to cross the accident spot after services were restored. This was followed by Chennai-Erode Express at 7.30am, Chennai-Coimbatore Shatabdi Express at 7.40am and Chennai-Bengaluru Double Decker Express at 7.45am.

Suburban trains scheduled to be operated from Moore Market Complex suburban station to Gummidipoondi were run from Beach station.

FIR filed in National Textiles Corporation scam
  • FIR filed in National Textiles Corporation scamNEW DELHI: CBI on Wednesday registered an FIR in a scandal worth Rs 1700 crore in a land deal of National Textiles Corporation.

The agency, top sources said, is probing former Union cabinet minister for textiles Shankar Singh Vaghela and former NTC chairman Ramachandran Pillai in the deal.

CBI sources said that raids are being conducted by teams involved in the scandal in several places including Pillai's premises.

Sources said that several incriminating documents related to the land deal(s) of NTC - when the UPA was in power - have been recovered.

According to CBI, assets sales committee, that was chaired by Pillai, allegedly changed its stand repeatedly in disregard of existing norms while selling NTC property to private company(s).

The agency has alleged that state-owned NTC manipulated the sale of land by restricting the competitive bidding.

Earth is running out of groundwater: Study
  • Earth is running out of groundwater: Study
WASHINGTON: Human activity is leading to the rapid draining of about one third of the planet's largest underground water reserves and it is unclear how much fluid remains in them, two new studies have found.
Consequently, huge sections of the population are using up groundwater without knowing when it will run out, researchers said in findings that will appear in the journal Water Resources Research and were posted online on Tuesday.

"Available physical and chemical measurements are simply insufficient," University of California Irvine professor and principal investigator Jay Famiglietti said in a statement.

"Given how quickly we are consuming the world's groundwater reserves, we need a coordinated global effort to determine how much is left," added Famiglietti, who is also the senior water scientist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Scientists used data from special Nasa satellites to measure groundwater losses.

In the first paper, they looked at 37 of Earth's biggest aquifers between 2003 and 2013. Eight of these were classified as "overstressed," meaning they were being sucked dry with almost no natural replenishment to offset the usage.

Five other aquifers were determined to be "extremely or highly stressed."

Scientists warned the situation would only worsen with climate change and population growth. The most overburdened aquifers are in the world's driest places, where there is little natural replenishment.

"What happens when a highly stressed aquifer is located in a region with socioeconomic or political tensions that can't supplement declining water supplies fast enough?" said Alexandra Richey, the lead author on both studies.

"We're trying to raise red flags now to pinpoint where active management today could protect future lives and livelihoods."

Researchers found that the Arabian Aquifer System, providing water for more than 60 million people, is the world's most overstressed source.

The Indus Basin aquifer of northwestern India and Pakistan is the second-most overstressed, and the Murzuk-Djado Basin in northern Africa is third, scientists said.

In drought-striken California, the Central Valley aquifer was labeled as "highly stressed."

The second paper concludes that the total remaining volume of the world's usable groundwater is poorly known and huge discrepancies exist in estimated "time to depletion."

"We don't actually know how much is stored in each of these aquifers. Estimates of remaining storage might vary from decades to millennia," Richey said.

"In a water-scarce society, we can no longer tolerate this level of uncertainty, especially since groundwater is disappearing so rapidly."

No. of Indians with over $100 million hits 928
  • richMUMBAI: The number of ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals in India has more than trebled to 928 in 2014 from 284 in 2013, according to a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report. Though BCG has clarified that the two figures cannot be compared because there has been a change in methodology, following the new study, India's ranking among countries in terms ?of the number of UHNW individuals has risen to number four in 2014 from the 13th position in 2013. The report defines individuals with financial wealth (excluding residential properties) of $100 million (Rs 640 crore) as UHNW.

BCG executives said, "Currency impacts versus the US dollar (our segments are in US dollars) and methodological changes to the national accounts' data make a comparison between the 2014 and 2015 reports very difficult." Going by 2015 methodology, UHNW individuals in India have increased to 928 in 2014 from 800 in 2013.

According to BCG, the Asia-Pacific region will be the main driver of increase in global wealth, fuelled by the rich in China and India. What's more, wealth in India is projected to record the fastest growth of 21% between 2014 and 2019 - double the growth rate of the next fastest wealth creator China (10.3%).

The US remained the country with the largest number of UHNW households at 5,201, followed by China (1,037), the UK (1,019), India (928), and Germany (679). The highest density of UHNW households was found in Hong Kong (15.3 per 100,000 households), followed by Singapore (14.3), Austria (12), Switzerland (9), and Qatar (8.6). UHNW households held $10 trillion, or 6%, of global private wealth in 2014, which was in line with 2013. At a projected CAGR of 12% over the next five years, private wealth held by the UHNW segment will grow to an estimated $18 trillion in 2019.

This top segment is expected to be the fastest growing, in both the number of households and total wealth. The number of households in this segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 19% over the next five years. "With such a large number of households entering this segment, the average wealth per household is projected to decline at a CAGR of 6%," the report said.

Private wealth held by the upper high net worth (HNW) segment (those with between $20 million and $100 million) rose by a healthy 34% in 2014 to $9 trillion. With a projected CAGR of 9% over the next five years, this segment is expected to top $14 trillion in 2019. Private wealth held by the lower HNW segment (those with between $1 million and $20 million) is expected to grow at a slightly lower rate (7%) over the next five years.

Globally, the total number of millionaire households (those with more than $1 million in private wealth) reached 17 million in 2014, up strongly from 15 million in 2013. The increase was driven primarily by the solid market performance of existing assets, in both the new and old worlds.

Millionaire households held 41% of global private wealth in 2014, up from 40% a year earlier, and are projected to hold 46% of global private wealth in 2019.

From a regional perspective, the US still had the highest number of millionaire households in 2014 (7 million), followed by China (4 million, which showed the highest number of new millionaires at 1 million). Japan was third, with a million millionaire households, down from previous years due to the fall of the yen versus the US dollar (with fewer households reaching the $1-million mark in dollar terms).

Although the BCG report does not rank billionaires, an earlier Huran report said that India ranks three among global billionaires preceded by US and China. India had moved up two places in the Huran Report, overtaking UK and Russia, where billionaires saw their wealth erode due to weak markets.

The report listed 97 Indian billionaires which included new entrants such as Anand Burman of Dabur group, P V Ramaprasad Reddy of Aurobindo Pharma, Nitin Sandesara of Sandesara Group, Vivek Chaand Sehgal of Motherson Sumi Systems and Nusli Wadia of Bombay Dyeing and Britannia Industries.

Thanks to NRIs, 3 small Gujarat villages each have Rs 2,000cr bank deposits
  • Thanks to NRIs, 3 small Gujarat villages each have Rs 2,000cr bank deposits
AHMEDABAD: Eight full-fledged branches of nationalized banks cater to just 1,292 households in the tiny hamlet Baladia, some 15km from Bhuj. The NRI-rich village boasts of bank deposits worth Rs 2,000 crore. Baladia is one of over a dozen wealthy Patel villages around Bhuj. With 7,630 households, bank deposits in Madhapar stand at Rs 5,000 crore. Kera village, home to 1,863 families, too has deposits of Rs 2,000 crore. Almost half of this is NRI money.

No wonder bank hoardings flashing interest rates for NRI deposits (up to 10%) is a common sight in these villages. "Some villages in Kutch like Madhapar and Baladia have very high NRI deposits. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest in the country," said K C Chippa, former convener of the State Level Banker's Committee (SLBC) Gujarat. Between them, Madhapar, Baladia and Kera have 30 bank branches and 24 ATMs.

According to bankers, other villages with bank deposits in the range of Rs 100 to Rs 500 crore include Nanpura, Sukhpar, Samatra, Kodaki, Bharasar, Rampar-Vekara and Mankuva to name a few.

The top three villages draw majority of deposits from a large number of non-resident Gujaratis (NRGs). While Kutchi Patels dominate Baladia and Madhapar, Kera has a vast number of Khoja community NRGs.

"NRGs form over 60% of Baladia village population. They put all their money in bank deposits," said Jadavji Garasia, a local businessman from Baladia.

According to a Dena Bank official, the district has NRI deposits of around Rs 9,181 crore, the second highest in the state after Ahmedabad. Bank deposits in Kutch total around Rs 24,353 crore.

Residents of these villages are settled mostly in countries like Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Tanzania, South Africa, the UK and Australia.

"The high number of deposits is because they feel indebted to their hometowns," said Haribhai Halasia, former president of the Kutch Levua Patel Samaj in the UK. "People like me who are living in the UK come to Kutch every 3-4 years and try to pay back our native place," said Halasia, who frequents his native village Madhapar, 20km from Bhuj. Halasia says there are about 2,500-3,000 people from Madhapar in Britain. Kutch Madhapar Karyalay, a body registered in the UK, has over 1,000 registered families from Madhapar.

Interestingly, those with high amount deposits also negotiate with banks for higher interest on their deposits. In many cases, banks also agree to pay them 0.25% or 0.5% more depending on the amount of deposits.
