Worm index linked to nation’s human development index

  • Washington : A team of researchers has developed the worm index, which they found to have a strong association with a nation’s human development index. With the Millennium Development Goals established by the UN coming to an end in 2015, experts have developed a new tool to show why neglected tropical diseases should be an essential component of these goals.

Such tropical diseases are considered the most common infections of the world’s poor. Now, work is on to evolve new Sustainable Development Goals that will entail a set of targets for the future of international development.

The team has used World Health Organization data for the number people at risk of parasitic worm infections in each of the largest nations and comparing this number to each nation’s population.”Through this paper, we have shown how the major neglected tropical diseases, which include intestinal worm infections, schistosomiasis and lymphatic filariasis, are intimately tied to human development. We found a very tight association between the worm index of a country and the human development index. The higher the worm index, the lower the human development index,” said Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas.” Because decreased human development is related to increased burden of parasitic worm infections, we recommend that serious consideration should be given to parasitic worm infections and other neglected tropical diseases when trying to attain goals that will ultimately improve human development; for example, when implementing the sustainable development goals,” said Jennifer R. Herricks, postdoctoral fellow at Baylor College of Medicine.

  • The capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has been adjudged the world’s best airport for the year 2014, under the category of handling 25 to 40 million passengers per annum, officials said on Saturday.

“We are honoured to represent an Indian airport at a highly acclaimed international forum as ACI. India lags behind China in border infrastructure: panel
  • NEW DELHI: India continues to lag far behind China in its plans to construct border military infrastructure for swifter mobility of troops and weapons, which Manohar Parrikar will realize during his first visit to the northeast as defence minister.

Accompanied by Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag and others, Parrikar on Saturday is also slated to visit Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, which much like eastern Ladakh continues to be a major flashpoint between India and China. Also on the cards is a visit to the Bum La pass located on the border.

Parrikar's experience there may be akin to what his predecessor AK Antony described as "an eye opener" in 2007. When Antony for the first time looked across the Nathu La border post in east Sikkim, the realisation finally hit home that China had constructed high-quality roads right till their military outposts along most stretches of the unresolved 4,057km line of actual control (LAC).

Indian troops, in turn, had to struggle through treacherous terrain on foot to reach their forward positions in many sectors, with no proper roads and lateral links as well as the complete lack of rail connectivity.

Eight years later, the story remains somewhat same. "In case of war, the (Indian) Army cannot reach Tawang area in a day. While our neighbouring country can reach the border within two or three hours, our Army takes more than a day to reach there. This is a matter of great concern with regard to our defence preparedness," the parliamentary standing committee on defence said this week, expressing great "dismay".

UN campaign to support adolescent girls.
  • United Nations Foundation's Girl Up campaign, supporing the empowerment of girls everywhere in the world, is expanding its fundraising efforts to help protect the rights of adolescent girls in India.

The first new programme support country added since Girl Up began almost five years ago kicks off a Mother's Day fundraising campaign aimed at supporting adolescent girls in India's Rajasthan state.

Funding will help United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reach 7,500 girls a year in Rajasthan to protect their rights, ensure their education and prevent child marriage and early pregnancy, a media release said.

"As we continue to work to improve the lives of the hardest to reach girls living in the places where it's hardest to be a girl, I am excited that Girl Up is expanding the campaign to India," said Melissa Hillebrenner, Director of Girl Up.

India has one of the fastest growing youth populations in the world, with one-fourth of that population made up of adolescent girls, said the group with girl advocates in 66 countries.

Within the family, however, girls often receive less health care, education and fewer opportunities than boys, as they are often forced to drop out of school, marry, and have children at a young age, it noted.
