Jayalalithaa's acquittal in DA case: It's not the end, Karunanidhi says
-
CHENNAI: Reacting to the Karnataka high court's verdict acquitting AIADMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Monday said it was not the end.
It was not the final verdict, he said in a statement. "What has been pronounced today is not the final verdict. I would like to remind one and all about Mahatma Gandhi's saying that there is a court above all courts and that is conscience," he said.
Recalling the arguments in the case, Karunanidhi said, "Once Justice C R Kumaraswamy said while the opposition has 65 marks, AIADMK lawyers have only 35 marks. As they have got 65 marks, they have passed. What has happened? How did they get 100 marks?"

Nepal relief: How India made a foe out of a friend
-
KATHMANDU: India may have pulled out all stops to help quake-devastated Nepal with 'Operation Maitri', but the friendly neighbour may remember China's silent work in their country more than the Indian effort. The perception, unfortunately, is that the Indians talked too much, making a foe out of a friend.
Indian politicians and media first extended their activities to Nepal in the 1940s when it was fighting the Ranas. The period marked the flight of King Tribhuvan, who clandestinely supported the anti-Rana forces, to India, and the foundation of Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal in Kolkata.
Some say these developments allowed Indian politicians and media a role in Nepal's internal affairs. In 1950, India brokered a peace deal between the King, Ranas and political parties. This was perhaps its first post-independence foray into affairs abroad. But in no time India spoilt its goodwill in Nepal, first by setting up a military mission there and then by becoming a party to the internal power tussle.
The Nepalis resented the presence of the Indian army, which was supposed to help them expedite development work. India openly went against King Mahendra when he sacked BP Koirala's ministry in 1960. By then Nepal had spawned a media that projected India as a threat to its sovereignty.
A decade later India was in a similar predicament in Dhaka when helping Bangladesh obtain freedom from Pakistan. India's tacit support to Nepali Congress when itlaunched an armed struggle against King Mahendra in the 1960s complicated matters for New Delhi.
This continued till 1990 when Congress and the United Left Front launched a movement for restoration of multiparty democracy in Nepal. The agitation was announced at a Nepali Congress meeting, attended, among others, by former PM Chandra Shekhar in Kathmandu.
Much has happened since then. Nepal is now a vibrant democracy with an influential media. Though the Nepalis are proud they were never under foreign rule, they acknowledge that their economic destiny is tied with India's, their biggest aid giver.
China and other big powers understand this and allow India a bigger role in the Himalayan nation. This became evident when India brokered a truce between the Maoists and mainstream parties in 2006. What baffles the Nepalis is what they call India's China obsession. In 1988-89 Delhi opposed King Birendra's decision to import weapons from China. A decade later it allowed Nepal to get arms from abroad to fight Maoists.
Many in Nepal say the hyper-active Indian media tried to keep their country ahead of China in their earthquake coverage. In contrast, China seemed least interested in publicity.

CAG report being misinterpreted, says Nitin Gadkari
-
NEW DELHI: Facing attack over a CAG report, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday broke his silence in Parliament, saying there was no corruption or misappropriation charge against him and the government auditor's report was "deliberately being misinterpreted for political reasons."
Gadkari, whose dismissal is being demanded by opposition after CAG report alleged irregularities in loan extended to his family-linked Purti Group, said in Rajya Sabha that the auditor has nowhere named him as a wrong-doer.
But the Congress members were not satisfied with his statement and continued to shout slogans even as minister of state for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi asserted that Gadkari will not resign. The House saw five adjournments till noon over the issue.
Amid slogan-shouting by Congress, Gadkari read out a statement saying the CAG report was "deliberately being misinterpreted for political reasons".
"My respectful submission before this august House is that let us follow the established procedure in the matter of CAG reports and if any wrong-doing is established by the PAC, which will be discussing the CAG report in due course of time, the law should take its own course," he said.
"The CAG has nowhere named me as a wrong-doer nor there is any adverse comment against me. There is neither any indictment nor any charge of corruption or misappropriation against me of the PSKL (Purti Sakhar Karkhana Ltd)," the road transport and highways minister said.
He said the principal loan amount of Rs 46.63 crore was provided by state-run Indian renewable energy development agency to Purti Group for a 22-MW bagasse-based power plant in Nagpur and major part of the interest has been repaid.
Noting that he was chairman of PSKL from 2000 to 2011, he said he was neither an MP nor held any public office in government when the 13-year loan was extended to the firm in 2008-09.
"The Audit report alleges lapses/irregularities in procedures followed by IREDA, which were explained in detail by IREDA and comments of the CAG are not acceptable to IREDA," he said.
"PSKL has not committed any misappropriation nor has it misrepresented any facts before IREDA. The audit report does not allege any such conduct," he claimed.

AAP govt to sue everyone who speaks against Arvind Kejriwal
-
The Delhi government will now be filing defamation cases against media organisations for carrying any news that damages the reputation of the Aam Aadmi Party and its ministers. Any officer associated with the Aam Aadmi Party can lodge a complaint with the principal secretary if he feels that a certain news item jeopardizes his or the government's reputation. Going one step further, the Aam Aadmi Party has decided to sue everyone who questions Arvind Kejriwal's decisions.
"Ever since our party came into existence the media has been trying to malign our reputation," a senior AAP leader said. "I know we used to be the first one to criticise Modi government's each and every move but now when the media is doing the same with us, we can't digest it somehow. We totally support freedom of expression till you don't say anything nasty against our government because then we might have to put you in jail. The media has helped us a lot in reaching where we are today but now that they have started to expose our loopholes, we might as well get rid of them. In fact any person who utters a word against us will be sued and taught a lesson," he further added.
Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan were not surprised at all when they came to know about this. "The Aam Aadmi Party strongly believes in getting rid of anyone once they are of no use to them. After Anna Hazare, the latest victim is media. We are way too familiar with all this because we were thrown out of the party when we showed dissent," said both Yadav and Bhushan.
Congress and BJP attacked the AAP for this anti-democratic move. "They used to blame Modi for being a dictator but now they are the ones trying to muzzle the media and reprimand anyone who speaks against them. With this move they have lost all the respect people had for them," said a BJP leader.

Dawood in Pak; will do everything to bring him to justice: Govt
-
NEW DELHI: Under attack over its statement in Parliament that it was not aware about Dawood Ibrahim's whereabouts, the government today asserted that the Mumbai blast mastermind is in Pakistan and it will do everything to bring him to justice.
"Whether we have to pursue Pakistan or pressurise it, we will not rest till Dawood Ibrahim is brought back," Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in Lok Sabha and averred that India has maintained pressure on Pakistan at all levels over the issue.
He alleged that Pakistan has "failed" to track him down despite being provided with "overwhelming evidence" about his presence there, based on "credible information".
Singh's assertion came amid Opposition attack over a Home Ministry's reply to a question in Lok Sabha last week that it was not aware about the gangster's location.
He had then sought to deflect the criticism, saying the stand was similar to the one taken by the UPA government in Parliament in May 2013 and signalled a rethink. He had said he will make a statement in Parliament today.
In the statement, Singh said, "India has credible information about his presence in Pakistan... Despite the neighbouring country being handed over overwhelming documentary and other evidence, it has to locate him and initiate legal process."
India has provided Pakistan the details of his Pakistani passports and reported addresses there from time to time, asking it to locate and hand him over to it.
Noting that a red-corner notice issued by Interpol was pending against Dawood since 1996 and a UN Security Council's special notice against him was also pending since 2006, the Home Minister said Pakistan was bound by international obligations to locate and extradite him.
