Expert advisory committee to help water resources ministry Constituted
  • NEW DELHI: Four days after appointing a full-time advisor in the Union water resources ministry, the government on Monday constituted a three-member expert advisory committee, headed by BN Navalawala — ex-UPSC member and one of the advisors to the Gujarat chief minister — to assist the ministry on all matters pertaining to water resources including the NDA's dream project of inter-linking of rivers.
Navalawala, who had also served as secretary in ministry of water resources during 2001-02, will be the chief advisor of this expert committee having two other members as advisors.
The two members would be appointed in consultation with the chief adviser.
"The group may co-opt any other experts for a specific purpose and specified period with the prior approval of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation", said an official statement.
Internationally renowned water resources expert, Navalawala has expertise in planning, design and execution of multipurpose water resources projects, flood management and economic planning & financial management of water resources.
He is a fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and a Life Member of Indian Water Resources Society. He is also a Member of American Society of Civil Engineers.
Besides, he was associated with the formulation and implementation of the World Bank-supported International Programme for Technology Research in Irrigation & Drainage (IPTRD), which was launched in 1990 to address the need for technology research in irrigation and drainage. He has also experience of working at various international organisation like World Bank, FAO, UNDP, IWMI-Sri Lanka.
Before constituting the committee headed by Navalawala, the government had on Thursday appointed the software engineer-turned politician and the BJP's national convenor of its water management cell Shriram Vedire as adviser to the ministry of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation.

Key role for Indian scientist in Nasa project
  • MUMBAI: As comet Siding Spring arrives on the Red Planet on Sunday, Isro's Mars Orbiter, along with four other such spacecraft, will be at "some risk" from the comet's particles.
Monitoring the five spacecraft will be Nasa's Canberra Deep Space Network (DSN), ready with manoeuvres to handle eventualities. And playing a key role in this will be the DSN's Ashish Soni, who provides engineering support for systems used in telemetry, tracking, commanding and monitoring the spacecraft.
The Canberra DSN, owing to its particular geographic position, generally picks up messages sent by all spacecraft and then transmits them to other countries' DSNs, such as Isro's Byalalu facility on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. It will handle MOM's communication till the mission is completed.
Considering the sensitive nature of the time period when Comet Siding Spring arrives at Mars, the Canberra DSN is working on a tracking strategy to provide reliable communication at that time. The comet's particles would be travelling at Mars relative velocity of 56 km per second.
"All the antennas at Canberra will be pointed at Mars to track the orbiters, which includes Isro's MOM," Soni, who joined the Canberra DSN in 2007, explained.
In an email interview to TOI, Soni, a graduate from the Bhopal-based Rajiv Gandhi Prodyogiki Vishwavidyala, said, "Our 70m station will have five receivers set up to capture signals from all five orbiters simultaneously. MOM will be communicating continuously throughout the period of greatest risk via the Canberra 34m station, in addition to the planned receiver on the 70m station."
According to Soni, the Canberra DSN will only intervene in case of emergency "if communication to the spacecraft is lost for extended period".

Joko Widodo sworn in as Indonesian President
  • Joko Widodo was sworn in as Indonesia’s new President on Monday.
Mr. Widodo, the first Indonesian President not to come from the ranks of the country’s established political, business and military elite, took the oath of office in a ceremony at Parliament in Jakarta, attended by regional leaders and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
“To the fishermen, the workers, the farmers, the merchants, the meatball soup sellers, the hawkers, the drivers, the academics, the labourers, the soldiers, the police, the entrepreneurs and the professionals, I say let us all work hard, together, shoulder to shoulder, because this is a historic moment,” said Mr. Widodo.
A former furniture salesman, Mr. Widodo rose from humble beginnings to become Jakarta’s Governor before winning July’s presidential election with 53 per cent of the vote. Polls showed most of his support came from lower-income, non-urban Indonesians attracted by his simple demeanour and record of honest, hard work.

WHO declares Nigeria free of Ebola
  • The World Health Organisation has declared that Nigeria is now free of Ebola.
In an update issued on Monday, the U.N. health agency said the country’s containment of the lethal disease was a “spectacular success story”.
The announcement comes after 42 days have passed twice the disease’s maximum incubation period since the last case in Nigeria tested negative.
WHO said Nigeria had traced nearly every contact of Ebola patients in the country, all of whom were linked to the country’s first patient, a Liberian man who arrived with symptoms in Lagos and later died. Nigeria reported 20 cases of Ebola, including eight deaths.
For an outbreak to be declared officially over, WHO convenes a committee on surveillance, epidemiology and lab testing to determine that all conditions have been met.

India set to become $2 trillion economy this year
  • NEW DELHI: India is poised to become a $2 trillion economy this year, while its GDP size would cross another milestone of $3 trillion after five years in 2019, according to IMF's latest world economic outlook.
India's ranking would also improve to seventh largest economy in the world, while measured on "current prices" basis in US dollar, in 2019 from its tenth position currently.
Latest data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) show that Indian economy is set to be worth $2.05 trillion this year, increasing its size from $1.88 trillion in 2013.
Last year too, India was among the ten largest economies in the world.
Going by the IMF, United States would remain the world's largest economy with a size of $17.42 trillion, followed by China at $10.35 trillion.
Meanwhile, India is all set to cross the $3 trillion milestone in 2019 with a size of $3.18 trillion, surpassing Russia, Brazil and Italy. This would also make India the world's seventh largest economy.
At that time, Brazilian economy is estimated to be worth $2.89 trillion while Russian and Italian economies would have a size of $2.59 trillion and $2.45 trillion, respectively.
The United States would remain the world's largest economy in 2019 with a size of $22.15 trillion, followed by China ($15.52 trillion) and Japan ($5.43 trillion).
In 2019, other economies in the top ten segment would be Germany ($4.55 trillion), the United Kingdom ($3.7 trillion) and France ($3.39 trillion).
"India has recovered from its relative slump; thanks in part to effective policies and a renewal of confidence, growth is expected once again to exceed 5%," as per latest IMF World Economic Outlook report.
India's economic growth was below 5% in the past two financial years.
"The post election recovery of confidence in India also provides an opportunity for that country to embark on its much-needed structural reforms," according to IMF report.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government took charge in May this year after sweeping the general elections.

Types of Computer
  • On the basis of working principle there are three types of computers.

    a)Analog Computer
An analog computer (spelt analogue in British English) is a form of computer that uses continuous
physical phenomena such as electrical, mechanical or hydraulic quantities to model the problem being solved.
    1. Thermometer
    2. Speedometer
    3. Petrol Pump Indicator
    4. Multi meter

    b) Digital Computer
Acomputer that performs calculations and logical operations with quantities represented as digits, usually in the binary number system.

    c) Hybrid Computer (Analog + Digital)
A combination of computers those are capable of inputting and outputting in both digital and analog
signals. A hybrid computer system setup offers a cost effective method of performing complex simulations.

    On the basis of Size..
    a)Super Compute
It is the fastest computer. Supercomputers are very expensive and are employed for specialized applications that require immense amounts of mathematical calculations.
For example, weather forecasting requires a supercomputer. Other uses of supercomputers
include animated graphics, fluid dynamic calculations and nuclear energy research and petroleum
    exploration.
The major difference between a supercomputer and a mainframe is that a supercomputer channels
all its power into executing a few programs as fast as possible, whereas a mainframe uses itspower to execute many programs concurrently.

    b)Mainframe Computer
A very large and expensive computer capable of supporting hundreds and even thousands of users
simultaneously. In the hierarchy that starts with a simple microprocessor (Eg: in watches) at the
bottom and moves to supercomputers at the top, mainframes are just below supercomputers. In
some ways, mainframes are more powerful than supercomputers because they support more simultaneous programs. But supercomputers can execute a single program
    faster than a mainframe.

    c) Mini Computer
In size and power, minicomputers lie between workstations and mainframes. In the past decade, the distinction between large minicomputers and small mainframes has blurred, however, as has the
distinction between small minicomputers and workstations. But in general, a minicomputer is a
multiprocessing system capable of supporting from 4 to about 200
    users simultaneously.

    d)Micro Computer
    i. Desktop Computer: A personal or micro-mini computer sufficient to fit on a desk.
ii. Laptop Computer: A portable computer complete with an integrated screen and keyboard. It is
generally smaller in size than a desktop computer and larger than
    a notebook computer.
iii. Palmtop Computer/ Digital Diary/ Notebook / PDAs:Ahandsized computer. Palmtops have no keyboard but the screen serves both as an input and output device.

    e)Workstations
It is a terminal or desktop computer in a network. In this context, workstation is just a generic term
for a user's machine (client machine) in contrast to a "server" or "mainframe."

    Major brands of the computer:
    a) IBM/ IBM Compatible Computers
    b) Apple/ Macintosh.
