ISRO's Big Launch: Military Communications Satellite GSAT-6
  • ISRO's Big Launch: Military Communications Satellite GSAT-6SRIHARIKOTA:  The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today launched its twenty-fifth home-made communications satellite in space using the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) that uses an Indian made cryogenic engine being tested for the third time.

The heavyweight Indian rocket weighs 416 tonnes and is nearly 50 meters tall.

The GSLV rocket is being powered using an Indian made cryogenic engine. Dubbed the 'naughty boy' this rocket has had a patchy record with less than half the flights being successful.

Speaking to NDTV Kiran Kumar, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had said "GSAT-6 carries one of the largest antennas we have built a 6 meter diameter antenna, the prime purpose is to make sure that communication can happen with smaller and smaller hand held devices whether it is for data, video or voice. The users for this will be the strategic sector as it gives a tremendous opportunity for using very small handheld devices in the remotest places."

In 2013, India had launched a dedicated communications satellite for the Indian Navy.

The 2,117 kg Indian-made satellite carries a very special giant antennae which will open up in space like an umbrella. The large antennae will help India's strategic forces to communicate with each other on secure lines using special small hand held devices. A capability most needed in today's modern network centric warfare.

    • Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad All Set for Mega RallyPATNA:  Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad are actively wooing supporters to make their August 30 campaign rally here a success.

The event will be their first big show of unity a year after the two leaders joined hands in a bid to defeat the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state.

Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad, Janata Dal-United president Sharad Yadav and senior Congress leaders are all monitoring the preparations for the Gandhi Maidan rally.

Lalu Prasad is busy addressing meetings in rural areas of districts close to Patna and asking his supporters to attend the rally, leaders from his Rashtriya Janata Dal said.

Nitish Kumar has visited half-a-dozen districts, including his home district Nalanda. He has also in the past one week laid foundation stones and launched projects, RJD leader Shakti Yadav said.

Lalu Prasad's sons Tejaswvi and Tejpratap as well as senior RJD and JD-U leaders are visiting rural areas to invite supporters to the rally.

Sharad Yadav said the "Swabhiman rally" of the grand alliance would be an answer to "Modi's arrogance and repeated insult to Bihar".

Nitish Kumar has been saying at all meetings: "I have done whatever I could in the last 10 years and wish to do more... Give me a chance. There is more I want to achieve."

JD-U leader Ajay Alok said: "We have been mobilizing party leaders, workers and supporters to persuade people in large number to attend the rally."

    Now, Buy Gifts Through Facebook
    • Now, Buy Gifts Through FacebookSAN FRANCISCO:  Social networking site Facebook is testing a virtual assistant, called 'M', nestled within its Messenger that can help users buy gifts and make restaurant reservations.

"Today (Thursday) we're beginning to test a new service called M. It is a personal digital assistant inside Messenger that completes tasks and finds information on your behalf," David Marcus, vice president of messaging products at Facebook, said.

Mr Marcus said 'M' can perform tasks that no one else can and added that unlike other virtual assistants in the market like Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana, 'M' can complete tasks on behalf of the users.

"It can purchase items, get gifts delivered to your loved ones, book restaurants, travel arrangements, appointments and way more," said Mr Marcus.

He added that the project was still at a very early stage but insisted it represents a major step forward in helping Messenger users have "more time to focus on what's important in their lives".

Facebook Messenger is used by more than 700 million people worldwide.

WTO rules against India in solar dispute with US
    • WTO rules against India in solar dispute with USThe World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled against India in a dispute with the United States over its solar power programme , business newspaper Mint reported on Wednesday.
The newspaper quoted an unnamed official from the commerce ministry as saying the country planned to appeal the decision, made after the United States complained about domestic content requirements in a programme aimed at easing chronic energy shortages in India, Asia's third-largest economy.India has said it expects peak power demand to double over the next five years from around 1,40,000 megawatts today. To help meet that demand, India wants 1,00,000 Mw of new capacity from solar panels , with at least 8,000 Mw from locally made cells.
The newspaper said the WTO dispute settlement panel, in a confidential report to New Delhi and Washington, found India violated global trade rules by imposing local content requirements for solar cells and solar modules, and also struck down incentive policies such as subsidies provided for domestic solar companies to manufacture cells and solar modules.
The WTO typically circulates decisions on disputes to the parties before they are made public.

Govt announces 98 smart cities, UP tops the list
    • Govt announces list of 98 smart cities, UP tops the listThe Centre on Thursday announced the names of 98 cities selected for the Modi government's flagship smart cities project but Mumbai, Bengaluru and Patna don't figure in the list.
The names of the cities selected for the Rs 48,000 crore smart city project was released by the Centre pending a nomination each from Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ambitious project with announcement of criteria and guidelines for 100 smart cities to be selected through city challenge competition in June 25.
While Jammu and Kashmir has to nominate one city, UP has got slots for 13 cities to be proposed as Smart City based on the urban population and number of notified cities.
"The Government of Jammu and Kashmir sought more time to firm up their choice. More information is sought from the Uttar Pradesh government about the 13th smart city that is yet to be announced," Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said here after releasing the list here.
According to Urban Development Ministry sources, Jammu and Kashmir wants both Jammu and Srinagar to be developed as smart city though the state has got only one slot in the project.
Both Meerut and Rae Bareli has got equal points for the 13th slot in the city challenge competition in UP so now the state has to decide whom it wants to nominate, sources added.
Asked when the names of the remaining two cities will be decided, Naidu said it will be decided in due course.
Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Bareilly, Aligarh, Jhansi, Sharanpur are among 12 cities selected in UP for the smart city project.
However, Patna and Bangaluru and Mumbai are not in the list.
"It is the states which has sent the names of the cities to be included in the project. Names of Patna and Bangalore were not proposed by their respective states. As far as Mumbai is concerned, Maharashtra has proposed Navi Mumbai for that purpose," Naidu said.
While UP has maximum of 13 cities, followed by 12 by Tamil Nadu and 10 by Maharashtra to be developed as smart cities, Madhya Pradesh has seven cities in the project.
Karnataka and Gujarat have six cities each while Bihar and Andhra has three each and rest of the states have two and one cities respectively in the project.
All Union Territories, including Delhi, have found place in the list.
Moradabad, Solapur, Amritsar, Rourkela, Durgapur and Ajmer also figure in the list of 98 cities.
The next stage is the choosing 20 cities in the first lot by end of the year and the next two years 40 cities each will be selected for receiving Central funding of Rs 500 crore spread over the coming five years.
Naidu said "The first stage of competition was entirely conducted by the States and UTs only with little role for the Union Urban Development Ministry."
Centre will release Rs 2 crore for each of the 98 cities in the next couple of days for preparation of smart city plans.
Our ministry has drawn up region wise panels of reputed agencies for assisting the cities to prepare smart city plans, he said.
For the selection of 20 cities, the broad criteria will be city vision and strategy, cost effectiveness, credibility of implementation and innovation.
Naidu said those cities which are not selected in the first round can again participate in the second and third round by improving their performances.
Even states can nominate new names after elimination of some cities in the final round of selection, he said.
      The list is as follows:

While the plebs throng Facebook, the rich have their own exclusive networking clubs on the Internet for which entry is by invitation.
    • SOCIAL MEDIA
Digital Hangouts for MillionairesIt's amazing how the Internet mimics the real world. Just as there are elite exclusive clubs where admission is reserved for the wealthy set, a host of social networks out there on the web have no room for plebeians and are the hangout of the rich and famous.
There are quite a few elite clubs out there vying to woo the wealthy into their sites, but not all have met with success. Take the way Netropolitan Club, a network where people had to pay $9,000 for membership cropped up in 2014, creating quite a buzz. A year later, it has closed its shutters citing lack of interest in its service. Enter the site, and you find a note from its founder James Touchi-Peters about the closure and the fact that all those who signed up have been refunded. But some of the early elite clubs still remain. In fact, elite networking zones on the Internet came up the same year that the world's largest social network Facebook was set up. ASMALLWORLD (ASW) founded in 2004 was the earliest private social network for the elite.
Founded by Count Erik Wilhelm Wachtmeister, a Swedish Internet entrepreneur, it was dubbed as Myspace for Millionaires when it launched. Although membership was free, it was on an invite only basis - though it rose to nearly 500,000 users. In 2010 he sold off his stake in the company and went on to form another elite social network called Best of All Worlds financed by VCs and wealthy investors from the Middle East.
Meanwhile, ASW under the new investors reinvented itself as an international lifestyle club for like-minded globe-trotting people. It has become a paid subscription site and cut down its membership capping it at 250,000 to maintain its exclusivity. It keeps its members posted on events to attend and people to meet and provides detailed city guides listing the posh hang-outs of an area.
Other elite networks to make a splash include Eleqt, which has a free membership - albeit obtained only through an invitation - as well as a paid premium membership for which one has to fork out $5,000. Eleqt has already spread itself to 15 cities and has ambitions to spread further.
Then there is Elixio, a network connecting executive level professionals - a sort of LinkedIn for the elite - into which you can get in only through a corporate email ID.
Meanwhile, Facebook recently created an elite enclave within its Live application, a video streaming platform that is exclusive only to famous people.
Did anyone say Internet democracy! What's that?
