  • Forest Cover Declines in 12 States, Union TerritoriesNEW DELHI:  The forest cover of 12 states and Union Territories has declined by over 1200 sq kms due to a variety of reasons including encroachment and mining, Lok Sabha was informed today.

Replying to a question, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said as per India State of Forest Report 2013, the total forest cover in the country is 697,898 sq km, which is 21.23 per cent of the total geographical area of the country.

"There is a net increase of 5871 sq km in the forest cover of the country as compared with India State of Forest Report 2011," he said.

Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Maharashtra and Andaman and Nicobar Islands have reported decline in forest cover due to encroachment, open cast mining, drying up of mangroves after tsumani and shifting cultivation practices.

'Cop Threatened to Kill Me,' Alleges Yogendra Yadav After Arrest and Release
    • 'Cop Threatened to Kill Me,' Alleges Yogendra Yadav After Arrest and ReleaseNEW DELHI:  Activist Yogendra Yadav was arrested and released today along with 90 others over a protest last night by farmers at Jantar Mantar in the Centre of Delhi.

Mr Yadav, who spent the night at a police station after being detained, alleged that he had been manhandled, beaten and threatened by the police.

"Even when we tried speaking to media, SHO Dinesh Kumar threatened to kill me," Mr Yadav told reporters after he was released.

"He said maar maar kar bharta bana doonga (I will make mincemeat of you)," alleged the 51-year-old, who was expelled from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party earlier this year.

His former AAP colleagues, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, came out in his support.

"The way the police has behaved with Yogendra Yadav, we condemn it. This is not right as peaceful protest is our fundamental right," Mr Kejriwal said, adding that he would appeal to Home Minister Rajnath Singh to look into the incident.

Mr Yadav tweeted through the night about "brutal assault" by the police.

Delhi Police chief BS Bassi said his force had acted "within the realm of law."

Mr Yadav, who founded the Swaraj Abhiyan along with lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan, said he had gone to Jantar Mantar after learning about a police crackdown on farmers who, he said, were holding a "peaceful" protest. He alleged that he was bundled into a police van along with other demonstrators and taken to the police station.

Mr Yadav has been leading a protest by farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan against the government's proposal to change the way farm land is acquired for infrastructure projects.

They had led a 'tractor protest' near the Delhi border on Sunday night, where police had prevented the tractors from entering the city. The protesters had continued on to Jantar Mantar in the heart of New Delhi.

Gandhis Can't Accept Anyone Outside Their Family Can Run India: Arun Jaitley
    • Gandhis Can't Accept Anyone Outside Their Family Can Run India: Arun JaitleyNEW DELHI:  After launching his government's final push for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill in Parliament, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today hit out at Sonia and Rahul Gandhi over unrelenting protests by the Congress, saying they could not stomach anyone else ruling the country.

"They have taken the 2014 defeat badly. The Congress and their two top leaders are unable to accept that anyone outside the Gandhi family can rule India. It is high time that they accept it and drop their negative approach," Mr Jaitley said.

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president, has refused to call off her party's protests over senior BJP leaders involved in the Lalit Modi and Vyapam controversies. The Congress has demanded Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's removal for her help to tainted cricket boss Lalit Modi.

Arun Jaitley said the Congress is in "self-destruct mode."

"During their reign, their policies were a liability, it continues to be a liability on the economy of the country in the Opposition," Mr Jaitley said.

He accused the Congress of going back on its word on GST.

"The Congress mooted the proposal in 2006 and introduced GST in 2011, they failed to bring a consensus. In less than a year, PM Modi's NDA (National Democratic Alliance) brought about a consensus," Mr Jaitley said.

There were repeated disruptions in Parliament today as the government introduced the GST proposal, with just two more days left in the monsoon session.

The Rajya house was adjourned seconds after the GST bill was introduced, as the Congress refused to stop its protests in Parliament to allow a discussion.

The GST bill will enable one national sales tax to replace an array of taxes in states.

    • Maggi Exceeded Lead Content, Violated Labelling Rules: GovernmentNEW DELHI:  Nestle India was asked to recall Maggi noodles as its samples were found to be containing more than permissible limits of lead and were also violating the labelling requirement, Government today said.

"Samples of Nestle's Maggi noodles were found to be containing more than the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm of lead and also violating the labelling requirements about presence of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

"Based on the test results reported from different states, confirming presence of lead beyond permissible limit, an order dated June 5, 2015 was issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directing Nestle India to recall its Maggi Noodles," Health Minister JP Nadda said in a written reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha.

The FSSAI had through its communication dated May 25 this year advised all the states and UTs to draw samples of the Maggi Noodles (Nestle) and get the same tested from authorized labs.

The FSSAI had also advised the Commissioners of Food Safety of all the states and UTs through its communication dated June 8 2015 to draw and test the samples of Noodles and allied products of other brands as well, Mr Nadda said.

The Minister said that the implementation and enforcement of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 primarily rests with the state and Union Territories.

FSSAI regularly takes up the issue of enforcement of the provisions of the act with the state authorities through written communications and interaction during the meetings of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC).

The CAC also comprises the Commissioners of Food Safety of all states and UTs for effective implementation of the Act and the rules and regulations there under, the Minister said.

He added that surveillance, monitoring, inspection, random sampling and testing of food products are undertaken by the officials of food safety departments of states and Union Territories s to ensure compliance with the standards laid down under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Rules and Regulations.

Clock ticking as Rajya Sabha has 2 days to pass the GST Bill this session
    • Clock ticking as Rajya Sabha has 2 days to pass the GST Bill this sessionEven as the NDA-led government managed to move the goods and services tax bill (GST) at the last-minute in Rajya Sabha for a major tax reform, the opposition, in particular the Congress refused to call off protests in Parliament to allow a discussion.
Shortly after the first round of votes was conducted on the much-hyped Bill, the opposition members stormed into the Well of the House, forcing its adjournment. Following the disruption the house was adjourned till Wednesday.
The government has only two more days now to pass the GST Bill in the current session as the monsoon session of Parliament ends on August 13. If the bill is nor ratified by the Rajya Sabha in the next two days it will be shelved like the Land Bill till the Winter Session.
GST that seeks to replace all indirect taxes, with a uniform levy has already been approved by the Lok Sabha and was in the last session referred to a Rajya Sabha Select Committee.
The panel has given its report endorsing majority of the provisions, while suggesting changes in compensation to states and definition of supply for the purpose of states levying additional one per cent tax. The report of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee was tabled in Parliament last month. However, the Congress, the AIADMK and the Left parties had submitted dissent notes on the same.
The Congress, has said it will not allow Parliament to function unless the PM removes senior BJP leaders it accuses of graft charges, including Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. The Congress also wants changes to the bill, which it says must be more "simple and comprehensive"

    • Rupee plunges 29 paise against dollar, post yuan devaluationThe rupee fell sharply by 29 paise to 64.16 against the dollar in early trade on Tuesday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange due to a rise in the greenback against other currencies overseas.
Dealers attributed the fall to the dollar's gains after China devalued yuan, which pushed up demand from importers for the US currency. However, a higher opening in domestic equity market capped losses to some extent.

POSCO signs deal to set up steel plant in Maharashtra
    • POSCO signs deal to set up steel plant in MaharashtraSouth Korean steelmaker POSCO and Shree Uttam Steel and Power have agreed to set up a 3-million-tonnes-per-year integrated steel plant in Maharashtra.
Shree Uttam Steel and Power is owned by the co-promoters of Uttam Galva Steels, which is jointly owned by ArcelorMittal.
The plant would be the first in India for POSCO, the world's No.6 steelmaker, as it continues to battle regulatory hurdles for a decade-old project to set up a mega $12 billion steel plant in Odisha.
Both POSCO and ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, have scrapped a number of other projects in India over the past two years, citing difficulties in acquiring land and mines.
POSCO, which already has steel processing centres in the cities of Pune, Chennai and near New Delhi, has made little progress and could scrap the Odisha project after a new law made it costlier to source iron ore for the plant.
The proposed joint venture plans to set up the plant, to be located at Satarda in Sindhudurg district, in two phases and hopes to take advantage of an expected surge in steel demand in the country, Uttam Steel said on Tuesday.
An investment of about $1 billion is needed to set up a 1-million-tonne-per-year steel plant.
Shares in Uttam Galva, which processes hot-rolled steel to finished coils for domestic and export markets, surged as much as 16 per cent on news of the joint venture.
