4 naval personnel, including an officer, still missing, after vessel sank on Thursday

  • NEW DELHI: The Navy is continuing its massive search for the four missing personnel who were among the 29 on board the A-72 torpedo recovery vessel (TRV), which sank around 35 nautical miles south of Visakhapatnam on Thursday. The Navy has deployed nine warships, P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft, Dornier planes as well as Sea King 42C and Chetak helicopters in the operation but is yet to trace the officer (a commander-rank naval armament expert), two divers and a sailor who are were found missing after the TRV sank around 8 pm on Thursday.

While 24 people on board the vessel were rescued by another warship, destroyer INS Ranjit, in the vicinity, the only confirmed victim till now has been identified as POME (petty officer, mechanical engineer) James Jacob. The 112-tonne A-72 sank to the seabed, which is at a depth of 370-metre in the area, much beyond the reach of divers.

BJP’s insistence on Prabhu for cabinet upsets Sena

  • MUMBAI: Shiv Sena has been offered a fait accompli by BJP on the subject of the two new possible inductees in the union cabinet, senior BJP leaders have told TOI. And the new inductions, instead of placating the Sena, may exacerbate the tense relationship between the two parties. BJP president Amit Shah on Friday offered two berths to the Sena during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet expansion on Sunday. BJP's insistence that Suresh Prabhu be one of the two has not gone down well with the Sena. The Sena conveyed its willingness to the BJP to accept a ministership in the Union Cabinet, but with a rider that the power-sharing feud in Maharashtra should first be resolved.

In a first UN rights body hears '84 survivors

  • JALANDHAR: For the first time in 30 years, the office of UN high commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in New York on Friday recorded testimonies of the survivors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The officials also received documentary evidence about the alleged role of Congress leaders in the violence.

Gurdeep Kaur and Jasbir Singh, survivors of November 1984 violence, gave their testimonies. Gurdeep Kaur, whose husband has been bedridden since 1984, traveled from Ludhiana to record his statement. Jasbir Singh had lost 26 members of his family and is a prime witness in the case against Jagdush Tytler.

The two gave an account of how they witnessed Congress leaders leading death squads carrying voter lists and how the police turned a blind eye to the killings after the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Many visitors miss Attari date as BSF cuts crowd

  • ATTARI: Many of the tourists heading to Attari border for witnessing the beating the retreat ceremony were turned back due to the new security mechanism at Attari following the Wagah bomb blast. As part of this, the BSF has cut down on the number of people in the viewers' gallery after the terror attack.

On Saturday, several viewers were not allowed for the flag lowering ceremony despite their entreaties before the BSF jawans on duty.

Upset over being denied the opportunity to watch the popular ceremony, a number of people demanded that the drill should be stopped if the BSF couldn't let every visitor watch it. "This is not done, we have come from Kolkata and they are not allowing us inside," said businessmen Kartik Manna. "They should stop this entertainment business and concentrate more on the border security, why can't they lower flag in a simple ceremony as is being done everywhere else," he fumed.

‘Party followed democratic process in selecting CM’

  • Panaji: Mapusa MLA Francis D'Souza, who was deputy chief minister in the Manohar Parrikar cabinet, took the oath of office and secrecy immediately after new chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar was sworn in at the Raj Bhavan. D'Souza, who created a flutter on Friday by stating that he would not accept a cabinet post if he was not made chief minister, relented on Saturday and joined the new cabinet in the afternoon.

Asked why he had gone back on his Friday 'dissent', D'Souza said the party had followed a democratic process by getting all MLAs to vote for the three aspirants to the CM's post—himself, legislative assembly speaker Rajendra Arlekar and health minister Parsekar. "Parsekar got the highest number of votes proving that majority of the MLAs favoured him," said D'Souza.

For Fadnavis’ PR boys, Prithviraj Chavan still CM

  • Upon noticing the goof, so stung was the first BJP chief minister of the state that he said he would certainly not let it pass.
MUMBAI: Imagine the embarrassment for the young and full-of-beans Devendra Fadnavis when, despite his assurances about efficiency and application of mind in governance, an official communique released by his own public relations cell mentions Prithviraj Chavan as the head of government in the state.

Upon noticing the goof, so stung was the first BJP chief minister of the state that he said he would certainly not let it pass.

"It's a very serious matter," he said. "Despite the fact that I am the chief minister, my predecessor's name was mentioned in the official release. Appropriate action will be taken."

It was not the first time, either, in Fadnavis' short career as CM so far. He was the victim of a bureaucratic goof-up even on the day of his glory, October 31, when he was sworn-in in a grand ceremony at the Wankhede; the protocol department released the invitation card for the function with his name spelt wrongly. Fadanvis, it said. Careful spellers will note that the Nagpur native likes it Fadnavis.

Kashmiri women joining saffron movement in valley

  • When the BJP won the parliamentary elections with a huge majority earlier this year, some Kashmiri women supporters came out dancing and waving posters of Narendra Modi on the streets, which are generally filled with anti-India protesters.
SRINAGAR: The BJP, a party that had no serious takers until now in the Muslim majority and conflict-torn Kashmir valley, is drawing considerable support from Kashmiri women in the run up to the assembly elections due later this month.

When the BJP won the parliamentary elections with a huge majority earlier this year, some Kashmiri women supporters came out dancing and waving posters of Narendra Modi on the streets, which are generally filled with anti-India protesters. Though very cautiously, but People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti too has praised Modi in the past and given subtle indications that her party may not be entirely averse to an alliance with the BJP after the elections.

More recently, Hina Bhat, 35, a dental surgeon was rewarded for her vocal and dauntless support to the party when the BJP chose her as its candidate from Amira Kadal assembly constituency. She is the only Kashmir Muslim woman to get a ticket in Jammu and Kashmir so far.

The dental surgeon, who is the daughter of former MLA and MP of J&K's grand old party, the National Conference, Mohammad Shafi Bhat, quit her job at SKIMS medical college a few years ago to do social work. "All the political parties--National conference, PDP, Congress, had failed people of J&K and never provided good governance. I had planned to contest assembly elections as an independent candidate from Amira Kadal constituency but when I discovered that Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who is the most misunderstood person in Kashmir, has better vision for the country's development and equally for the valley, I joined the party," Hina told TOI.
