    Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed 9th East Asia Summit’s inaugural session on 12 November. He gave the call for ‘Act Asia Policy’ by amending the traditional ‘Look East Policy’. The 12thedition of ASEAN-India Summit was also held simultaneously. The East Asia Summit (EAS) is a forum held annually by leaders of 18 countries – Australia, Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, The United States and Vietnam.

The United States and China on 12 November 2014 unveiled ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gases. What is this new target for United States, which is a move to cut pollution levels at a much fast rate?

  • Reduction in emission of greenhouse gases by 26% to 28% by year 2025 as compared with 2005 levels
    Both countries agreed to reduce emissions on the occasion of bilateral talks held on the sidelines of the 9th East Asia Summit held at Myanmar. US President Barack Obama announced that his country would move much faster in cutting pollution, with a goal to reduce by 26% to 28% by 2025, compared with 2005 levels. Earlier in his presidency, he had set a goal to cut emissions by 17% by 2020. China on the other hand didn’t commit to cut emissions by a specific amount. Instead, it set a target for country’s emission to peak by 2030, or earlier if possible. United States and China are two of the largest polluters in the world and the breakthrough achieved by them displays their desire to display a united front on climate change.

    Broadly, the Railway Ministry is putting up for private participation projects that are expected to be financially remunerative and on which construction work has not started.     Consumer inflation for September 2014 stood at 6.46%. Sharp drops in food and oil prices were the major reasons for significant drop in inflation. On the other hand food price inflation, under a new series published by the government, eased to 5.59% in October from 7.67% in September. With consumer inflation coming below the Reserve Bank of India’s target level of 6%, and global oil prices hovering near 4-year lows, expectations are high that the central bank could cut rates.

    The exercise of choosing Assembly Speaker became a mere formality after the Sena and Congress withdrew their nominee for the post of Speaker paving way for unanimous election of the BJP’s candidate as the new Speaker. This controversial trust vote was won as the Shiv Sena and the Congress, which had said that they would vote against the motion, chose not to exercise the option. Sharad Pawar’s NCP also did not participate in the voting.  Later Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde was Maharashtra’s new Opposition leader.
