Netaji's Japanese Interpreter Confirms Plane Crash: UK Website
-
LONDON: A Japanese interpreter confirmed that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose died at a military hospital in Taipei after a plane crash in 1945, according to information released by a UK website set up to catalogue the last days of the nationalist leader.
Kazunori Kunizuka, who worked as an interpreter with Netaji Bose from 1943 to 1945, is still alive and has recorded in graphic detail in his diary the last days of Netaji and his death as a result of a plane crash at Taipei on August 18, 1945, said the website bosefiles.info.
The information was conveyed to the website by Noburu Okabe, London correspondent of the Sankei Shimbun newspaper, who also handed over a copy of the diary to the website.
Ashis Ray, Netaji Bose's grandnephew and creator of the website, said "The diary is in Japanese. We will get it translated and post relevant portions from it in due course".
According to Mr Okabe, Mr Kanizuka is 98 years old and lives in an old people's home in Kobe in Japan. Mr Okabe has met him and testified the diary unequivocally confirms Netaji Bose's demise in a Japanese military hospital in Taipei after the air tragedy.
Earlier when Mr Ray visited Taipei, he met Yukichi Arai, son of Captain Keikichi Arai, a Japanese army officer who was one of seven survivors (of an estimated total of 14 passengers and crew, including Bose, on the flight) of the crash. Captain Arai died in 1971.
However, he, too, recorded in his diary that Netaji Bose succumbed to injuries suffered in the crash.
As per his description, soon after take-off from Taipei the Japanese bomber carrying Bose "immediately lost speed, crashed and went up in flames".
Of the seven survivors, six deposed before either the 1956 Netaji Inquiry Committee or the 1974 Justice GD Khosla Commission or both, including Netaji Bose's most trusted aide de camp Colonel Habibur Rehman and Captain Arai.
All six independently submitted that Netaji Bose died consequent to the crash.
Two Japanese doctors - Dr Taneyoshi Yoshimi and Dr Toyoshi Tsuruta - and a Taiwanese nurse - Tsan Pi Sha - who treated him at the hospital or were by his bedside when he passed away, another interpreter Juichi Nakamura (who personally knew Netaji Bose from previous visits to Taipei) and Colonel Rehman, gave eyewitness evidence of Netaji Bose's final moments and of him breathing his last.
Also, there are at least three first-hand testimonies of Netaji Bose's cremation at Taipei as provided by Tan Ti-Ti, a Taiwanese who worked at the crematorium and personally prepared the body for the last rites, Ko Keng Yuan, a Taiwanese health official, and Colonel Rehman.
Netaji Bose died in the air crash in Taipei in 1945, according to documents that form part of 100 secret files, comprising 16,600 pages which were made public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Bose's 119th birth anniversary last month.

Congress Hits Back At PM Modi, Says Proud Of 'Family'
-
NEW DELHI: Taking an aggressive stand, Congress today hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for targeting the Gandhis, saying it was proud of the "family" and warned that any attempt "to separate them from the party" would attract a "befitting" reply.
The party's sharp retort came as its war of words with the government intensified ahead of the Budget session with PM Modi yesterday attacking Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, saying "one family" was disrupting Parliament to avenge defeat in 2014 Lok Sabha polls and stalling bills aimed at benefiting the poor.
Congress senior spokesman Anand Sharma today said the party was proud of the "family" which was "integral" to it and PM Modi should refrain from provoking and insulting the principal opposition.
"It is a funny way of seeking co-operation by attacking the leadership of the Congress and we want to tell the Prime Minister one thing categorically that when he talks of our leadership or the family, we are proud of that and they are integral to the Congress," Mr Sharma said.
The Congress leader told the Prime Minister that he and the BJP cannot separate the Indian National Congress and its leadership and "if you try to do so, we will be giving a befitting reply to the best of our ability and they must never be in doubt about that".
Asked whether the confrontation would escalate in the budget session in the backdrop of the Prime Minister's remarks, he said, "If that is what he wants, then it is most unfortunate for our democracy."
"He is the Prime Minister of the country. He should not provoke and insult the principal Opposition Party and then they say that he seeks co-operation," Mr Sharma said.
He also contended that it was "always due to the stubborn and confrontational attitude of the Prime Minister" that the proceedings in Parliament were stalled.
"We would like the Prime Minister not to continue with his confrontational attitude and he must answer our questions," Mr Sharma said.

In Court, Kerala Supports Ban On Women's Entry At Sabarimala Temple
-
NEW DELHI: The Kerala government has told the Supreme Court that banning entry of women of menstrual age in historic Sabarimala temple is a "matter of religion" and it is duty bound to "protect the right to practice the religion of these devotees".
In an affidavit, the state government said administration of the temple vests with the Travancore Devaswom Board under the Travancore-Cochin Hindu Religious Institutions Act and the decision of the priests are final in the matter of worship.
"In the context of Sabarimala, the administration vests with the Travancore Devaswom Board under the provisions of the Travancore-Cochin Hindu Religious Institutions Act, 1950," the affidavit filed by state chief secretary Jiji Thomson said.
"Under the Act, there is a statutory duty cast on the Board to arrange worship in temples in accordance with the usage. Therefore, in matters of religion, it is the opinion of the priests that is final," said the affidavit.
A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and NV Ramana would take up the matter on February 8.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government, while withdrawing the affidavit filed earlier in the apex court by the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in November 2007 supporting entry of women into this temple, said, "The restriction on women between the age of 10 and 50 has been prevailing in Sabarimala from time immemorial. This is in keeping with the unique 'pratishta sangalp' or idol concept of the temple."
"The same is an essential and integral part of the right of practice of religion of a devotee and comes under the protective guarantee of the Constitution under Articles 25 and 26 which have been held to contain guarantee for rituals, observances, ceremonies and modes of worship which are an integral part of religion," it said.
Urging the court to dismiss the Public Interest Litigation filed by Indian Young Lawyers' Association, the affidavit said, "The present petition which seeks to change the beliefs and customs of crores of devotees by judicial process is wholly misplaced and liable to be dismissed".
It added that the state government is "duty bound to protect the right to practice the religion of these devotees".

Gold price extends gains, hits 9-mth high on global cues
-
Gold prices surged for the 7th straight day, moving up by Rs 30 to hit nine-month high of Rs 27,700 per 10 grams at the bullion market on Saturday, tracking a firm trend overseas and buying by jewellers to meet the wedding season demand.
On the other hand, silver held steady at Rs 35,800 per kg in limited deals.
Bullion traders said a firming trend overseas as a sell-off in equities and signs of uneven US economic growth fuelled bets that the Fed would hold off on raising rates again, boosted appeal of the precious metals, influenced gold prices in New Delhi.
Besides, sustained buying by jewellers driven by ongoing wedding season demand too helped gold to trade at nine-month high, they said.
Globally, gold climbed 1.57 per cent to $1,173.50 an ounce and silver by 1.08 per cent to $15.01 an ounce in New York in Friday's trade.
In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity edged up by Rs 30 each to Rs 27,700 and Rs 27,550 per ten grams respectively, a level last seen on May 19 2015.
The precious metal had gained Rs 620 in the previous six days.
Sovereign, however held steady at Rs 22,600 per piece of eight grams.
On the other hand, silver ready held unchanged at Rs 35,800 per kg, while weekly-based delivery weakened by Rs 20 to Rs 35,805 per kg.
Meanwhile, silver coins continued to be traded at last level of Rs 52,000 for buying and Rs 53,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

FM Arun Jaitley asks states to step up infra, social sector spending
-
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday he expects states to increase spending on infrastructure and poverty alleviation schemes as the 14th Finance Commission has devolved higher funds to them.
"We expect that those states whose resources have been increased after the implementation of the 14th Finance Commission will spend further on infrastructure creation and anti-poverty programmes since their income have increased considerably," Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi.
Several states, in their pre-budget meeting with Jaitley, sought higher allocation in the upcoming budget for implementing Pay Commission recommendations as well as under centrally sponsored schemes.
"The states have discussed their own resources and each one of them is competing for higher resources, higher investment and they are all geared up to fight this environment of global slowdown so that India remains an economy which is on the move," he said.
The 14th Finance Commission had last year recommended a record 10 per cent increase in the states' share in the Union taxes to 42 per cent, which has been accepted by the Centre.
The 7th Pay Commission in November recommended increase in remuneration of about one crore government employees and pensioners which is estimated to impose an additional burden of Rs 1.02 lakh crore in 2016-17. The new pay scales, subject to acceptance by government, will come into effect from January 1, 2016.
"As far as central government is concerned we would like to cooperate with every state, and as the growth of states increases, the national growth will also increase," Jaitley said in his opening remarks.
He also said that one of challenging area is agriculture which suffered in last two years due to inadequate monsoon.
During the meeting, the states also demanded early release of the long pending compensation for phasing out of central sales tax (CST) and raising state's borrowing limit as per the recommendation of 14th Finance Commission.

Jet Airways posts record quarterly profit at Rs 467 crore
-
The Naresh Goyal-led Jet Airways on Saturday reported a stand-alone net profit of Rs 467 crore for the three months to December, a multi-fold growth from Rs 63 crore a year ago, driven by higher traffic and lower fuel costs.
For the second-largest airline, this is the third consecutive quarter of profits and a record in recent years.
The carrier said the robust numbers further validate its turnaround plan, which was unveiled after its part equity sale to the UAE carrier Etihad in 2013.
Chairman Naresh Goyal attributed "the record profit to the overall strong financial performance arising from several initiatives undertaken to improve productivity and efficiency". He also said had it not been for the forex losses, net income would have been Rs 515 crore.
Jet Vice-Chairman, and President and Chief Executive of Etihad Airways James Hogan said, "We are very satisfied with the operating and financial performance of Jet that has resulted in record profits. We remain committed to providing solid support and driving further synergies between the two partners".
Etihad owns 24 per cent in Jet.
Revenue improved Rs 266 crore to Rs 5,702 crore while passenger revenue rose 4.8 per cent to Rs 4,845 crore, from Rs 4,621 crore.
While domestic capacity went up 14.6 per cent, passenger traffic grew 15 per cent. The international capacity clocked a growth of 2.6 per cent while growth in passenger traffic stood at 5.1 per cent. Higher passenger traffic and increased aircraft utilisation also led to a higher average seat per km (ASKM), which helped improve both operating and financial performance.
The airline, in a statement, said its pre-tax profit (Ebidta) quadrupled to Rs 751 crore during the reporting period.
Attributing the better numbers to all-round improvement in performance, the airline said its domestic ASKM grew 24 per cent even without any addition of new aircraft. Aircraft utilisation for the Boeing 737 fleet continues to rise and reached 13.07 hours in the reporting period, which it claimed is one of the highest in the industry.
A focus on cost reduction initiatives has resulted in the non-fuel cost per ASK coming down by 4.6 per cent while total cost per ASK declined 15 per cent.

IMF hopes India will implement 'critically important' reforms
-
Bullish on India, IMF chief Christine Lagarde has hoped that the Government would be able to implement a series of "critically important" economic reforms including GST for unleashing the country's growth potential.
"The IMF is quite bullish about India, and our forecast for 2016, 2017 is 7.5 per cent growth," Lagarde said in response to a question at the University of Maryland on Friday.
"So we see India as benefitting, actually it's one of the major beneficiaries of the lower oil prices. When you look at the scale of benefits for particularly the emerging countries, India comes out, you know, way ahead," the IMF Managing Director said.
"IMF also believe that the monetary policy, the taming of inflation is also going to benefit the very large domestic market of India," she said, noting that consumption is also going to be one of the key drivers.
"All of that of course, with the hope and the provision, if I may say, that the trend of reforms identified by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, can actually proceed, whether it's in the fiscal area, by way of implementing the Goods and Services Tax, significant reform like the land reform that is considered," Lagarde said.
She said those reforms are actually going to be "critically important" for the unleashing of growth potential that India has to offer.
"One additional component which we regard as important, and that would be the investment in infrastructure that is so badly needed in many countries, but in India in particular, where there are bottlenecks, both in terms of physical infrastructure, as well as, I would say, administrative infrastructure, and those are key policies to implement," she said.
GST, which will subsume all indirect taxes such as excise duty, service tax and sales tax into one uniform rate, is stalled in the Rajya Sabha as Congress is pressing for three changes.
The Congress has stalled the passage of the constitutional amendment Bill, derailing the government's plan to roll out GST from April 1, 2016.
The three demands are a cap on the GST rate in the Constitution itself, removal of the proposed 1 per cent additional tax on inter-state movement of goods and setting up a judicial panel to adjudicate disputes among states.
