  • In 2014, when State Bank of India invited applications for 1,800 odd probationary officer posts, around 20 lakh candidates across the country lined up for a shot. Why SBI is a fascinating prospect for the candidates. Answer lies in the facts that SBI PO brings Job security with itself, which is naturally a big factor. SBI has a great track record of the fastest promotions for any PSU. Also, despite being a government organization, SBI operates in a professional manner. Probationary officer positions are not just empowered but very well-paid as well.
Talking about the salary, an SBI PO enjoys the most hefty salary as compared to the other public sector banks including it’s own subsidiaries.

    ·                     Cash Component : Rs 36,046
    ·                     Bank's contribution to PF : Rs 1,690

    (i) Medical Aid for self (100%) and for family (75%)
(ii) Home Travel Concession/Leave Fare Concession
(iii) Concessional Interest Rates for Housing/Car/Personal Loans

This year, country's largest bank has advertised for 2,000 vacancies for the same roles. If the trends are taken in to consideration, around 2.2 million are expected to sit for the first time happening preliminary examination.

SBI PO will now take place in three stages

eGovWatch: Cops launch Mobile app for reporting loss of documents
  • A mobile app named ‘Hyderabad City Police- Lost Report’ has been launched to facilitate citizens to report to city police about the loss of documents or articles and obtain a digitally-signed report online from police.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy, who launched the app, said it would enable citizens to apply for duplicate documents and claim insurance of articles that are lost or missed.
“These digitally-signed police reports are issued to citizens online only in cases of lost or missing items, which don’t amount to crime and where no FIRs are required to be registered,” the Hyderabad Police Chief told reporters.
Presently, people are applying for police report through Mee-Seva Centres by paying service charges. The complaint will be sent to the police online by Mee-Seva Centre for further course of action.
The police station will physically interact with the complainant and verify the information furnished by the complainant and approve for issue of report. “The complainant has to go Mee Seva Centre for collection of police report, which is digitally signed after one week. Since this process is cumbersome and time-consuming, the people are facing lot of inconvenience to obtain a police report for the documents or articles lost or missed,” Reddy explained.

German Nobel laureate Guenter Grass died
  • Guenter Grass, the Nobel-winning German writer who gave voice to the generation that came of age during the horrors of the Nazi era but later ran into controversy over his own World War II past and stance toward Israel, has died. He was 87.

Matthias Wegner, spokesman for the Steidl publishing house, confirmed that Grass died on Monday morning in a Luebeck hospital.

Grass was lauded by Germans for helping to revive their culture in the aftermath of World War II and helping to give voice and support to democratic discourse in the post war nation.

Yet he provoked the ire of many in 2006 when he revealed in his memoir “Skinning the Onion” that, as a teenager, he had served in the Waffen-SS, the combat arm of Adolf Hitler’s notorious paramilitary organization.

In 2012, Grass drew sharp criticism at home and was declared persona non grata by Israel after publishing a prose poem, “What Must Be Said,” in which he criticized what he described as Western hypocrisy over Israel’s nuclear program and labelled the country a threat to “already fragile world peace” over its belligerent stance on Iran.

A trained sculptor, Grass made his literary reputation with “The Tin Drum,” published in 1959. It was followed by “Cat and Mouse” and “Dog Years,” which made up what is called the Danzig Trilogy after the town of his birth, now the Polish city of Gdansk.

Combining naturalistic detail with fantastical images, the trilogy captured the German reaction to the rise of Nazism, the horrors of the war and the guilt that lingered after Adolf Hitler’s defeat.

The books return again and again to Danzig, where Grass was born on Oct. 16, 1927, the son of a grocer.

In the trilogy, Grass drew partly on his own experience of military service and his captivity as a prisoner of war held by the Americans until 1946

MMRCA deal: India to scrap $20 billion mega project for 126 Rafale fighter jets
  • NEW DELHI: The Modi government has sounded the death knell for the deadlocked $20 billion MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 fighters, which was dubbed the "mother of all defence deals" around the globe after competition for it was launched by the previous UPA regime in 2007.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday also made it clear that if India goes in for additional French Rafale fighters, after the outright purchase of 36 jets decided during the Modi-Hollande summit in Paris last Friday, it will also be through government-to-government deals.

Net neutrality: Trai receives 1 lakh emails to save the internet
  • NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has received as many as 1 lakh votes from netizens across India supporting net neutrality in the country. The last day for netizens to send their views to Trai on the subject is April 24. Users can log on to www.savetheinternet.in to send an email to Trai. The entire process takes just two clicks.

Russia opens way to missile deliveries to Iran, starts oil-for-goods swap
  • MOSCOW: Russia paved the way on Monday for missile system deliveries to Iran and started an oil-for-goods swap, signaling that Moscow may have a head-start in the race to benefit from an eventual lifting of sanctions on Tehran.

The moves come after world powers, including Russia, reached an interim deal with Iran this month on curbing its nuclear program.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin signed a decree ending a self-imposed ban on delivering the S-300 anti-missile rocket system to Iran, removing a major irritant between the two countries after Moscow canceled a corresponding contract in 2010 under pressure from the West.

A senior government official said separately that Russia has started supplying grain, equipment and construction materials to Iran in exchange for crude oil under a barter deal.

Sources told Reuters more than a year ago that a deal worth up to $20 billion was being discussed and would involve Russia buying up to 500,000 barrels of Iranian oil a day.

Officials from the two countries have issued contradictory statements since then on whether a deal has been signed, but Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Monday one was already being implemented.

Govt emphasizes its rights to make policies related to natural resources
  • New Delhi: The government has sought to emphasize its rights to make policy and take decisions related to pricing of natural resources before the Supreme Court (SC).
On Monday, the oil ministry told the Supreme Court that courts should not interfere in a government’s pricing policies.
The government submitted that it is not the domain of courts to “embark upon the merits of economic policies framed by the government to consider whether the same is wise or a better policy can be evolved”.
Referring to a Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL)-led litigation seeking to appoint a third arbitrator over the pricing of domestically produced and saved natural gas, the affidavit argues why no arbitration should take place at all.
The government said that its pricing policy and guidelines cannot be the subject matter of an arbitration, which is used to resolve private disputes.
The case, being heard by justice Ranjan Gogoi, will come up next on 1 May for hearing.
