States need to do their bit for India's growth: Suresh Prabhu
  • NEW DELHI: Railway minister Suresh Prabhu said on Saturday that India can be $20 trillion economy if it continues to grow at 9%.
Addressing the ET Global Business Summit, Suresh Prabhu said that "states also need to do their bit for India's economic growth".
Talking about railways, Prabhu said that if we do not make any investment in railways today, then tomorrow there won't be any revenues and deterioration of services.
Addressing the Economic Times Global Business Summit on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had vowed to push through change at a fast pace but said subsidies should be continued to protect the interests of the poor.
The PM struck an optimistic note to say, "The New Age India has begun its transition, from a winter of subdued achievement lasting three to five years, to a new spring that beckons."
He referred to the challenge the government faces in repairing the damage to the economy under the previous regime, but asserted that efforts to rev the growth engine would succeed. "It will take hard work, sustained commitment and strong administrative action. But we can overcome the mood of despair," Modi said as he unveiled a comprehensive agenda to revamp the economy.

Congress launched a terror campaign against my book on Sonia Gandhi: Javier Moro
  • Javier Moro, Spanish author of a dramatized biography of Sonia Gandhi, 'The Red Sari' is relieved his book has finally been published in India. "A senior Congress leader launched a campaign against the book to scare away publishers. It was like a terror campaign against the book, they tried to kill it scaring off English-language publishers," he says.
The Congress, Moro says, emailed his Spanish publishers threatening them, almost ordering them to withdraw the book from all bookstores, even though by then it had been published in Spanish, Italian and other languages, not in English.
He laughs that for six months he was petrified of logging onto his email for fear of the many threatening emails he was regularly receiving from the Congress."Congress does a terrible job of managing Sonia's image," Moro says.
"They've turned her into a robot. They are so busy proving she's Indian, she's Indian, that they're trying to draw a portrait of her that doesn't correspond with reality. Truth is Sonia may have tried to become Indian, "but once you eat pasta you always eat pasta", Moro grins. He says when he once went to La Piazza, a Delhi restaurant, he found Sonia and family celebrating over an Italian meal. "That's normal. What's wrong with that? She may be ruling India, but she's still Italian."

Sahara bailout deal doesn't seem to be adding up
  • WASHINGTON: A Grammy-winning rap artist, a dubious New York sports agent, and the scion of an expat Indian "billionaire family" constitute the core of a mysterious group called Mirach Capital Group LLC that is trying to put together more than $ 2 billion that could result in bailing out Sahara Group honcho Subroto Roy from prison.
Little is known about Mirach Capital or its principals. Its sketchy website describes it as "a group of family offices operating in the arenas of real estate, aviation, and entertainment." Calls to a number listed in the website went to what appeared to be a virtual office, where an "Erica from operations" described the entity as ''family officials incorporated in a few places,'' and promised to have its CEO Saransh Sharma call back.
When Sharma did call back several hours later, he acknowledged that Mirach had no track record to speak of and was formed only a few weeks back with the primary purpose of consummating the Sahara deal. Describing himself as former stock broker and an "investment banker at heart," he said as a finance expert, he recognized the "this is a distress situation" and reached out to Sahara family to initially buy out its stake in various properties such as New York Plaza and Dorchester London, but Subroto Roy was "fixated on a loan."

US-returned techie held for planning to join ISIS
  • HYDERABAD: A 32-year-old US-returned engineer from Habeebnagar in the city was arrested at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport late on Thursday night while he was allegedly on his way to Syria to join ISIS along with his girlfriend, who is based in Dubai.Salman Moinuddin, the would-be militant, is also an active recruiter for ISIS, police said. He was nabbed before he could board a flight to Dubai on Thursday night. Sleuths of the Counter-Intelligence wing of the Telangana State Intelligence, who effected the arrest, said they had been tracking Moinuddin through his online activities and nabbed him no sooner did he land at the airport. It were the central intelligence agencies that had tipped off the state officials about Moinuddin, they added.
Apparently, Moinuddin had planned to join his girlfriend Ayesha in Dubai from where they were to proceed to Syria via Turkey and establish links with ISIS militants. Ayesha is a British national and was formerly known as Nicky Joseph alias Nicole before she converted to Islam after coming into contact with Moinuddin, police said. The accused had lived in the US for about four years including in Houston, Texas, and is said to have a MS degree in electronics from Texas Southern University.
"As per our information, after his studies, Moinuddin was doing odd jobs during which time he got indoctrinated to ISIS ideology online and decided to join them. Moinuddin and Ayesha created various Facebook groups under fictitious names and spread the ISIS ideology with the intention of attracting followers. After he was denied a visa extension, Moinuddin returned to Hyderabad in October last year and during the last two months, lured several youth across the country to join ISIS and wanted to take them to Syria," sources said. While Moinuddin was in Hyderabad, Ayesha was based in Dubai, they added.

Let marines return to Italy: European parliament to India
  • NEW DELHI: India and the EU again sparred over the issue of Italian marines accused of killing two Kerala fishermen with the European parliament adopting a resolution which described the detention of the marines as a serious breach of human rights.
India reacted sharply, saying the European parliament would have been well advised to not adopt the resolution when the matter was sub judice. The government has maintained all along that the matter was "sui generis" (unique) and hence could take time before the two countries could amicably resolve it.
The government is particularly upset that the resolution came at a time when it was working with the Italians for a "consensual'' solution as proposed by Italy. Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin recalled that the Supreme Court in its ruling on January 14 had granted three months extension to the Italian marine, Massimiliano Latorre, for his stay in Italy on health grounds and that the other marine, Salvatore Girone, was living in the Italian embassy in New Delhi.

Price of petrol cut by Rs 2.42 a litre, diesel by Rs 2.25
  • NEW DELHI: State fuel retailers on Friday pared the price of petrol by Rs 2.42 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.25 a litre but consumers were denied the full benefit of six-year-low crude prices as the government tapped off Rs 2 by raising excise duty.
But still, this is the ninth reduction in petrol price since August and the fifth in diesel price since October.
In Delhi, petrol will cost Rs 58.91 a litre, down from Rs 61.33 a litre now. Similarly, diesel will cost Rs 48.26 a litre, as against Rs 50.51 currently.
On Thursday evening, the scheduled day for fortnightly review, the fuel retailers had deferred announcing the price revisions as the government was reportedly debating the move to raise excise.
This is the fourth increase in excise duty since November and cumulatively customers have been denied the benefit of Rs 7.75 per litre reduction in petrol and Rs 6.50 a litre cut in diesel rates that was warranted due to the slump in oil price to $46 a barrel.
