       Muzaffar Ali selected for Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award

i. Muzaffar Ali, a noted filmmaker of India was selected for Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award. His name was selected for his outstanding contribution towards the promotion of Communal harmony, peace and goodwill. 

ii.
 The decision of selecting Ali for the award was taken at a meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award. This will be the 22nd edition of the Sadbhawna award and will be presented at Jawahar Bhawan on 20 August 2014 at a special ceremony. 

Note: Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was recipient of the 21st Rajiv Gandhi National Sadhbhavna Award.

• He had directed several movies like Bollywood classic Umrao Jaan, Gaman and Khizan
• 69-year-old, Ali is also a social worker and a Sufi poet
• In 2005, he became the recipient of Padma Shri
• He was born on 21 October 1944 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
 

About Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award

i. Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award (Rajiv Gandhi National Communal Harmony Award) is an award of India that is given for outstanding contribution towards promotion of communal harmony, national integration, peace and fight against violence. It was constituted in 1992. 

ii. It is given away on 20 August, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, which is also celebrated as the Sadbhavna Diwas (Harmony Day). The award carries a citation and cash award of 5 lakh rupees. 

Modi to visit Nepal tomorrow
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a visit to Nepal on Sunday with an aim of taking the bilateral relations to a higher level through further cooperation in economic and other areas.

ii. Mr. Modi will be in Nepal for two days during which the two countries are expected to sign agreements in sectors like power. India may also announce economic aid for that country.

iii. This will be the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nepal in 17 years, after I.K. Gujral had travelled there in June 1997, and underlines Mr. Modi’s focus on priority to India’s neighbourhood.

iv. The Prime Minister will hold talks with his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala and have the honour of addressing that country’s Constituent Assembly, only the second foreign leader after former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl who had done it in early 1990s.

RBI canceled the Licence of The Vasavi Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd., Hyderabad
i. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the licence of The Vasai Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd., Hyderabad (Telangana). The order came into effect with the notification. 

ii. The order was issued in view that the bank has ceased to be solvent and all its efforts to revive the bank have also failed and the depositors were being inconvenienced by continued uncertainty.

iii. Apart from this, RBI has also requested Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Telangana State to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator. 

Hagel’s India visit aimed at nurturing defence ties: Pentagon

i. US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel will visit New Delhi next week during which he will hold talks with his counterpart Arun Jaitley and other top officials, aimed at “nurturing” ties with India after the formation of the new government, a top Pentagon official has said.

ii. “The purpose of this trip is to nurture the relationship and not to ink any deal,” Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby told PTI.

iii. According to Mr. Kirby, Defence Secretary Hagel attaches a very high priority to the India-U.S. defence ties.
iv. During his three-day stay in New Delhi beginning August 7, Mr. Hagel will hold talks with Mr. Jaitley and is also expected to meet National Security Advisor Ajit K Doval and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

v. In his meeting with Mr. Jaitley, Mr. Hagel would talk about the Defence Trade and Technology Initiative, which was started during the previous UPA regime, and is considered to be path breaking in terms of defence ties between the two countries.

Cheque bouncing: SC settles law on where to file a complaint
- Bounced cheque must only be filed at the place where the bank dishonoured it.
i. The Supreme Court (SC) ruled on Friday that a complaint about a bounced cheque must only be filed at the place where the bank dishonoured it, settling doubts raised by its own earlier conflicting judgments on the jurisdiction of a magistrate.

ii. Some judgments had specified the place where the cheque was issued, others from where the notice of dishonour was sent and still others the place of receipt. Owing to this confusion in law, the matter was referred to a larger bench of the SC.

iii. A three-judge bench headed by T S Thakur unanimously laid down that the place of dishonour is the right place to file a complaint. However, to avoid inconvenience to persons already prosecuting such cases, the new rule is to come into force only with respect to cases in the future. Those in which trials have begun will remain in the same courts.

Deputy National Security Adviser Nehchal Sandhu resigned
i. Deputy National Security Adviser Nehchal Sandhu resigned. His resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 July 2014.

ii. Sandhu was appointed Deputy NSA in March 2013 for a fixed three year term. He was the Director of the Intelligence Bureau between 2010 and 2012.
Bachendri Pal conferred Bharat Gaurav by East Bengal Club

i. Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman mountaineer to scale Mount Everest was conferred with Bharat Gaurav, the highest honour of merit of East Bengal Club.

ii. The 60-year-old, Pal was honoured at a function held at the Khudiram Indoor hall at East Bengal's to celebrate the 95th foundation day celebrations.  She was given a cheque of 2 lakh rupees. 

Dipa Karmakar became first Indian woman gymnast to win medal in Commonwealth Games

i. Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian woman gymnast and second person of the country to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. She bagged a bronze in the vault event and scripted history for and in India. 

ii. Karmakar, 20-year-old from Tripura collected 14.366 points to finish third in the women’s vault final at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

CWG: S. Khatun wins bronze in lightweight category of women power lifting
i. India's S. Khatun won a Bronze medal in the light weight category of women power lifting. The Gold went to Nigeria in this event .

Guitar legend Dick Wagner died at 71

i. Dick Wagner, the famous rock guitarist of Alice Cooper died due to respiratory failure at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Centre in Arizona. He was 71. 

ii. He suffered from the respiratory failure, two weeks after undergoing a cardiac procedure. He was also a songwriter and an author

CBI arrests Syndicate Bank CMD for taking bribe

i. The CBI on Saturday arrested six persons including chairman-cum-managing director of Syndicate Bank SK Jain for allegedly taking bribe of Rs. 50 lakh for increasing credit limit of some companies in violation of banking rules.

ii. After keeping a watch on the activities of Jain for last six months on the directive of CBI Director Ranjit Sinha, CBI sleuths finally swooped on his relative and a Madhya Pradesh- based chartered accountant and arrested them while allegedly receiving cash from representatives of companies which have been involved in coal scam.

iii. The CBI has filed two cases against Jain -- accusing him of receiving a bribe of Rs. 50 lakh through conduits and abusing his official position to enhance the credit limits of some companies in violation of laid down procedures, official sources said.
