Nine New Battalions To Be Raised In Jammu And Kashmir Says Rajnath Singh
  • Nine new battalions will be raised to take stock on ground, in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today.

Out of these nine battalions, two will be dedicated to border areas and will be known as 'border battalions', he added.

Two women battalions each will be deployed in Jammu and Kashmir divisions and five 'Indian reserve battalions' will be raised in which 60 percent seats will be reserved for the people living in border areas.

Rajnath Singh, who arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on a two-day visit, said 14,460 bunkers will be built in the state at a cost of Rs. 450 crore. Out of these, 1,431 will be community bunkers and 13,029 will be individual.

He also announced that ex-gratia amount to the families of shelling victims has been increased from Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh. He added that the government had removed three years of fixed deposit term clause.

In another announcement, Mr Singh said that cash assistance for Kashmiri migrants has been enhanced by 30 percent. Each family would now get Rs. 13,000 compared to current relief of Rs. 10,000. It was last enhanced in 2015, he said, adding would benefit 22,000 families in the state.

The order will be issued soon after Mr Singh returns to New Delhi.

The Centre had announced a compensation package of Rs. 5 lakh for 36,454 families of PoK and Chammb refugees. The state government will also set up an advisory board for migrants to resolve their problems, Mr Singh added.

Voting Machine Snag Due To Excessive Light: Election Commission
  • A number of electronic voting machines (EVMs) malfunctioned in two places in the recent bypolls due to "excessive exposure to illumination", the Election Commission (EC) said on Friday.

The EC had formed two special teams to look into the unusually high number of voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines malfunctioning in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana and Maharashtra's Bhandara-Gondiya on May 28.

The preliminary report found two major technical reasons for the malfunctioning -- failure of contrast sensor and failure of the length sensor.

"These errors are mainly caused by excessive exposure to illumination in the polling stations," the EC said, citing the preliminary report submitted by the probing teams.

The EC has now asked the manufacturers to do a detailed technical analysis once the VVPATs are free from election petition -- the 45-day period after election when EVMs and VVPATs have to be mandatorily kept in the strong rooms.

"The commission has asked the manufacturers and the technical expert committee (TEC) to suggest additional design improvements as well as suggestions on any layout changes in the polling stations to prevent any excessive exposure to illumination in future," the poll panel said.

"The commission has also adopted the hardware improvement recommended by the TEC to prevent auto shut down of VVPATs due to excessive light," it added.

No Review Of India's Stand On China-Pak Corridor: Nirmala Sitharaman
  • India does not view its relations with China through the prism of China-Pakistan ties, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today, but ruled out the possibility of New Delhi reviewing its stand on CPEC project, a major irritant in Sino-Indian relationship.

She also said New Delhi is alert to the economic assistance provided by China to India's neighbours and ramifications it could have for the country.

"One thing I want to assure here...we do not view our relations with China through the prism of China-Pakistan relations," the minister told an event to mark the 10th anniversary of 'Chennai Centre for China Studies'.

Ms Sitharaman brought up the issue of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and made it clear that India will not "entertain any thought" of reviewing its stand on it, as it concerned its sovereignty.

"It is an issue of sovereignty, and we shall not entertain any thought (other than the stated Indian position) on that matter," she said.

The CPEC comprises a bunch of projects aimed at upgrading infrastructure in Pakistan and strengthening the economic ties between the two countries. The corridor will link Gwadar in south-western Pakistan to China's Xinjiang province, and would pass through Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, a territory India claims as its own.

"The kind of economic assistance being extended to many of our neighbours are all very clearly impacting the economies there, probably helping to bond a relationship with those countries.

"As a result, even a strategic presence could be enabled. I see a linkage. This is something which I think all of us, you (Chennai Centre for China Studies) as a think tank, and we as a government, constantly be alert to and understand its ramifications," she said.

Ms Sitharaman said Pakistani military was becoming increasingly dependent on the Chinese for arms and equipment.

"The focus of the reforms is therefore evidently moving towards the PLA (People's Liberation Army) Navy, PLA Airforce and PLA Rocket Forces as opposed to erstwhile emphasis on just the PLA," she said.

Noting that a "fundamental reorientation" of the China-Pakistan relations was not likely, the minister said last month's informal summit meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping was not just a "one-off" thing and that the two nations will "immensely benefit" from it.

"No doubt, in the long term, the relationship between India and China will immensely benefit from this engagement," she said.

Ms Sitharaman said she was in China in April this year with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) foreign and defence ministers' meet where India made a pitch for a greater interactive forum. "And for that we should have definitely a hotline between India and China," she said.

The hotline, she said, would reduce the time consumed in reaching the empowered decision makers in times of confrontation at the ground level.

"We have certainly underlined the fact that the border personnel meet, flag officer meet can all happen. But we need to have a better hotline that would easily help us in being ready for a (conflict) resolution in a short time," she said.

Devendra Fadnavis Allegedly Gets Threats Amid Row Over Plot To Kill PM
  • As controversy erupted over a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials in the Maharashtra government told news agency PTI that that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too had received two threat letters from Maoist organisations which were handed over to the police. The letters were received by the chief minister's office a week ago, sources in the state Home Department said today.

"The letters came after the recent anti-Naxal operations in Gadchiroli, in which 39 Maoists were killed. The letters have been handed over to the police for further investigations," the sources said, according to PTI.

According to the ministry sources, both letters mentioned the Gadchiroli encounters, and threatened Mr Fadnavis and his family members.

The Pune Police on Thursday had told a court that a letter seized from a suspected Maoist had revealed plans to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a "Rajiv Gandhi-like incident".

    narendra modi
A letter found at the home of a suspected Maoist mentioned a plot to assassinate PM Narendra Modi during a roadshow.

Five people were arrested on Wednesday for links with the banned CPI-Maoist - Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale, lawyer Surendra Gadling, activists Mahesh Raut and Shoma Sen and Rona Wilson. Described by the police as the "top brass of the urban Maoists", they were arrested in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon caste violence in January. The letter was found from the home of Delhi-based activist Rona Wilson, the police claimed in the sessions court, according to news agency PTI.

Rona Wilson is a member of the Committee for Release of Political Prisoners.

The letter talked about the need for Rs. 8 crore to procure M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds, and also about "another Rajiv Gandhi incident", public prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar told the court. "We are thinking along the lines of another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident. It sounds suicidal and there is a chance that we might fail but party must deliberate on our proposal...," the prosecutor quoted the letter as saying.

"...inspite of big defeats like Bihar and West Bengal, Modi has successfully established BJP governments in more than 15 states. If this pace continues then it would mean immense trouble for the party on all fronts...Col Kisan and a few other senior comrades have proposed concrete steps to end the Modi-era," a copy of the letter, released by ANI news agency, said.

Lawyers presenting the accused said the documents cited by the prosecution were fabricated and an attempt to frame them.

On Sidelines Of Regional Bloc Summit In China, PM Modi To Meet Xi Jinping For Second Time In Two Months
  • Over the weekend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet three world leaders who have been at odds with US President Donald Trump over various issues. PM Modi arrives in China on Saturday to attend a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Qingdao.

A bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled on Saturday. It comes less than two months after the two leaders held an informal summit in Wuhan where both sides promised to reset the relationship on areas of convergence.

''There is no doubt that India-China relations have gone through a transformation after Wuhan informal summit, we have left the Doklam crisis behind and moved forward to better ties", said Gautam Bambawale, India's ambassador to China.

Indian and Chinese troops were locked in a 73-day standoff in Doklam after India objected to construction of a road by China. Both sides had "disengaged" in August last year.

PM Modi's speech against protectionism at the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore was appreciated by China against whom America has imposed trade sanctions.

The Prime Minister will also meet Russian President Vladimir Putin less than a month after the two leaders held informal talks in Sochi. PM Modi will also meet Iranian President Hassan Rowhani who will be on his first trip abroad after the United States pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a move opposed by Beijing and Moscow and many European countries.

The meeting of SCO, an eight-member regional bloc led by China, coincides with the gathering of G7 leaders in Canada amid unease over US President Donald Trump's stand on climate change and trade tariffs .

While the G7 countries --- US, UK, France, Germany, France, Canada and Germany --- account for over 30 per cent of the world economy, SCO nations cover nearly half of the global population.

This will be the first time both India and Pakistan will participate as full-time members of the SCO that was established in 2001, with China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

While terrorism will be discussed at the summit, say sources, India won't use the multilateral forum to target Pakistan which will be represented by President Mamnoon Hussain. India hopes its expectations on countering terrorism will be reflected in the outcome document that will be signed by the member states.

There will be no formal talks between India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the summit.

"Neither have we nor has Pakistan asked for a formal meeting but during such summits, leaders may talk on the sidelines '', said Mr Bambawale.

India's FMCG space to see the most unlikely battle: Baba Ramdev vs Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
  • Taking on yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurved, Sri Sri Tattva, the FMCG brand founded by spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is planning to attract more eyeballs. The company has reportedly kept aside Rs 200 crore for advertising and promotion, The Economic Times reported.

As part of its marketing spend, the herbal products brand Tattva will use this cash for mass media advertising, outdoor campaigns and below-the-line marketing across the country to support its expansion plan of opening 1,000 stores in the country, the report said.

Based in Bengaluru, Sri Sri Tattva spent as much as Rs 10 crore on television advertising during the latest India Premier League (IPL) season. It was among the largest advertisers in the FMCG category.

Tej Katpitia, the chief executive of Sri Sri Ayurveda (SSA) Trust told the daily, "this year is a time when our efforts of the past year and a half, in terms of expansion in retail, will be solidifying. Our advertising will be aggressive and healthy, definitely much different from what it was in the past years."

Sri Sri Tattva supports the Art of Living foundation's rural and social welfare projects. The company sells products like Ojasvita (Health Drink), Sudanta (Herbal) Toothpaste, Cow's Pure Ghee, Honey and some ready to eat snacks. Besides groceries and staples, it has its own clothing line, home care and lifestyle products, health supplements, among others.

Katpitia added that there will be 3-4 major campaigns during this fiscal not only on news channels but also on general entertainment channels and regional networks. This will be coupled with on-ground activation and outdoor advertising.

The FMCG entrant, which claims that it is based on the idea of wholesome and healthful living, is pushing for rapidly growing its retail presence. Besides its own Sri Sri Tattva franchise stores, the herbal and ayurveda brand sells its products on website and mobile app. It is also looking to ramp up its presence on major e-commerce portals so that digital shoppers are able to buy their products at ease and have them home delivered.

Baba Ramdev along with Acharya Balkrishna started their journey in 1990 when they set up the Divya Yog Pharmacy Trust. Till 2011, the company's turnover was just Rs 400 crore. However, in last few years, Patanjali's rise was phenomenal that made it the biggest disruptor in the Indian FMCG industry. Patanjali's top five - in terms of revenue - products are cow ghee, dant kanti toothpaste, ayurvedic medicines, keshkanti shampoo and soaps.

75% of Canadians have no idea who PM Narendra Modi is, says a survey
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charismatic personality is not a mystery for Indians. Being the most popular leader of the world's largest democracy, PM Modi has always been a crowd magnet overseas as well. That his political rallies in India are houseful all the time is no secret, but he has time and again proved -- his roaring rallies in Madison Square Garden in New York and at the Wembley Stadium in London -- that his popularity has no match in the countries he visits. But, surprisingly, 75 per cent of Canadians don't know who Prime Minister Modi is, notwithstanding the fact that the country is home to a large number of Indians.

According to a survey conducted by Canada's Angus Reid Institute (ARI), two third of Canadians are unfamiliar with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who won the prestigious Time magazine's online reader's poll for TIME Person of the Year, defeating the likes of Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Mark Zuckerberg in 2016. A miniscule number of respondents who knew him described him as strong, influential and strategic.

The survey was conducted before the G7 nations' meet in Charlevoix, Quebec, this week. The G7 countries comprise Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

To accompany PM Modi in the 'unknowns' list' are Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (64 per cent don't know who is the leader of the world's third largest economy) and Brazilian President Michel Temer (90 per cent). However, the percentage saying they are familiar with Shinzo Abe has increased slightly since 2014, when nearly seven-in-ten (69 per cent) were unaware of the Japanese PM.

The report says PM Modi's popularity remains the same as it was in its 2014 survey. "This is perhaps more surprising in 2018 than it was four years ago. Since then, Modi had his first state visit to Canada in 2015, and visited with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a headline grabbing trip by the Canadian leader earlier this year," says the report.

ARI's executive director Shachi Kurl indicated that a major reason Modi is not a popular figure in Canada is because he isn't an 'English-speaking fixture' in the Western media. "Nor does he attract a lot of notoriety in the Western and European press. Canadians recognise the relationship it has with India, via the diaspora, and through business ties, but Modi is not a big personality or celebrity in Canada the way he is at home," Kurl told Hindustan Times.

As was the case in 2014, respondents were asked to select up to six words from a list of 24 descriptors to ascribe to the 10 world leaders asked about in the survey.

Canada's very own young leader, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has been described as 'charismatic' by 45 per cent of the respondents, while 31 per cent think he's 'weak'. Canadians described the leader of their neighbouring country, US President Donald Trump, in overwhelmingly negative terms like 'arrogant' (74 per cent), liar (62 per cent), 'bully' (61 per cent), 'dishonest' (56 per cent), and 'corrupt' (48 per cent). In contrast, the words used for his predecessor Barack Obama in 2014 were all positive like 'influential' (43 per cent), 'charismatic' (43 per cent), 'compassionate' (33 per cent), 'inspiring' (32 per cent) and 'credible' (29 per cent).

An overwhelming majority (around 63 per cent) people called Russian President Vladimir Putin as 'corrupt'. The percentage of Canadians identifying German Chancellor Angela Merkel as 'strong' has risen by 9 percentage points (42 per cent) since the 2014 survey. Around 37 per cent called her 'influential', while 28 per cent called a 'credible' leader'.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is also an obscure figure for 45 per cent of the Canadians, while 27 per cent of them also think he's 'influential'. Twenty one per cent said British Prime Minister Theresa May is a 'strong' leader, and the same percentage of people used the word 'charismatic' for French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron.

No Indian university in top 100; IIT Bombay ranked 162: QS World University Ranking 2019
  • Indian institutions like the IITs offer best education in the country, but they still have a long way to go when compared to other top universities in the world. This year too, no Indian university was able to secure a place in the top 100 best universities in the QS World University Ranking. The list is dominated by the American and European universities. However, we still have reasons to cheer as some of IITs were able to secure the place within the '200 club' among 1,000 best universities featured in the list.

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has climbed 17 spots in the QS World University Ranking to 162, while IIT-Delhi's ranking didn't see any improvement as compared to the last year's ranking of 172. IISC (Indian Institute of Science) jumped 20 places in the prestigious world university ranking. Ranked 190 last year, IISc was named as 170th best technical university in the world.

Other Indian universities included in the top 300 list are Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), which was ranked 264, IIT-Kanpur (283), and IIT-Kharagpur (295). IIT-Roorkee was ranked 381, while IIT-Guwahati was able to secure 472nd place.

Last year, IIT-Delhi was ranked 172, while IIT-Bombay was ranked 179. Just like IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras also didn't see any improvement in its ranking this year. However, IIT-Kanpur's ranking fell by 10 places. All other IITs -- IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee, and IIT-Guwahati -- featured in the list have seen improvement in their rankings. Besides, University of Delhi is the only other Indian university to feature in the top 500 list.

The top spots were grabbed by the US universities only. World-class MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) has made a history by topping the QS World University Rankings for the seventh consecutive year. According to QS, no other university has managed such a long run at the top.

Stanford University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), all retain their positions at second, third and fourth in the world, respectively. Other top global universities, which were able to secure place in the top-20 club, are Yale University, Columbia University and the University of Michigan; they all climbed at least one place in the world's top 20.

Just like the US, the UK also saw more universities climb than fall, although two of the British universities included in the top 10 have slipped since last year. One of those is the University of Cambridge, which has been overtaken in the top five by its arch-rival the University of Oxford, says QS.

Sugar prices up by Rs 200/quintal as bulk buyers hoard stocks amid price hike fears
  • Speculative buying pushed sugar prices by Rs 200 per quintal at wholesale market in national capital on Friday. According to reports, supply from sugar mills remained thin amid brisk demand. The prices in wholesale market rose as a result of stockists and bulk consumers like soft-drink and ice-cream manufacturers enlarged their sugar stocks fearing further rise in prices, said a PTI report. Slim supplies from sugar mills kept the sweetener prices up, the report added.

Sugar prices have risen by Rs 100 since government cleared a bailout package to the tune of Rs 8,500 crore to clear over 40 per cent of outstanding payment sugar millers owe to sugarcane farmers. The government has also fixed the maximum support price for refined sugar at Rs 29 per kilogram to ensure that the prices do not fall further.

In the price section, sugar ready M-30 and S-30 shot up by Rs 150 each to close the day at Rs 3,550-3,700 and Rs 3,540-3,690 per quintal. Similarly, mill delivery M-30 and S-30 prices climbed by Rs 160 each to settle at Rs 3,260-3,430 and Rs 3,250-3,420 per quintal.

Meanwhile among mill gate section, sugar Sakoti and Khatuli soared up by Rs 200 each to end at Rs 3,300 and Rs 3,460, followed by Budhana, Thanabhavan, Modinagar, Shamli and Malakpur by Rs 190 each to Rs 3,360, Rs 3,370, Rs 3,320, Rs 3,310 and Rs 3,320 per quintal, respectively.

Sugar Simbholi hardened by Rs 180 to Rs 3,280 per quintal, while Asmoli and Dorala by Rs 170 each to Rs 3,360 and Rs 3,350 per quintal. Prices of Dhanora quoted higher by Rs 160 to Rs 3,390, meanwhile, Mawana and Kinnoni rose by Rs 150 each to Rs 3,290 and Rs 3,430 per quintal. Sugar retail market prices ended up in the range of Rs 35-40 per kg, as per the PTI report.

Sun Pharma stock closes over 8% higher, top gainer on Sensex
  • The Sun Pharmaceutical Industries stock rose today after USFDA issued VAI status to its Halol plant. The stock closed 8.13% or 39.70 points higher at 528 level on BSE.  It was the top Sensex gainer in trade today.  VAI status means that though objectionable conditions were found at the plant, the issues do not justify further regulatory action and any corrective action is left to the FDA to take voluntarily.

A Sun Pharma spokesman said the company was assessing the FDA update. The drugmaker has faced regulatory scrutiny over manufacturing standards violations at its Halol plant, its key factory in Gujarat.

Analysts believe that this development brings the company closer to obtaining FDA clearance for its Halol plant.

The stock has lost 0.07% during the last one year and is down 7.48% since the beginning of this year.

The stock touched an intra day high of 532.65 after rising 9.04% on the BSE.

Brokerage KR Choksey has given an accumulate call on the stock with a target price of 539 level in recommendation dated May 29, 2018.

On May 26, Prabhudas Lilladher gave a reduce call on the stock with a target price of 447 level. The recommendation was issued on May 26, 2018.

Motilal Oswal has given a buy call on May 25, 2018 with a target price of 560. On Thursday, the stock closed over 3% higher at 488 level after brokerage CLSA raised the rating of share to 'buy' from 'sell'.

CLSA raised its price target to Rs 600 after the pharma firm reported a rise in net profit on May 25, 2018. "We believe earnings have bottomed out for Sun Pharma," CLSA Research said.

The drug major reported Q4 consolidated net profit at Rs 1,308.96 crore for the quarter ending March on the back of revenue growth in India and emerging markets even as US sales took a hit.

The company had reported a net profit of Rs 1,223.71 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal. Total revenue from operations fell to Rs 6,977.10 crore for the fourth quarter against Rs 7,136.96 crore during the same period of 2016-17.

For the year ended March 31, the drug major posted a net profit of Rs 2,161.55 crore, down 68.96 per cent from Rs 6,964.37 crore in 2016-17, Sun Pharma said in a regulatory filing.
